Peter Christensen awarded Guggenheim fellowship for project exploring an understudied shift in architectural history

How did patents transform the world of architecture? For a project aimed at answering that question, Peter Christensen, an associate professor of art and art history, has been awarded a Guggenheim fellowship for the 2021–22 academic year, as well as a residency at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Christensen uses the measure of patents and patentability in the history of architecture to tease apart the distinctions people have made between technology and art—and to see how architectural “authorship” has functioned.

TODAY'S UPDATES

Three new positive cases of COVID-19

Since Thursday’s notice in @Rochester, there are three new cases of COVID-19 to report: two River Campus students and one Eastman Campus student. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated daily. Whenever a new case is known, the contact-tracing process begins immediately with confirmed exposures being contacted and required to quarantine.

The Medical Center is continuing to make vaccine clinic appointments available to all University faculty, staff, and students. See this URMC COVID-19 Clinic List to register.

It’s extremely important for the health of the University community that individuals continue to adhere to the face masking and social distancing protocols. Even as some individuals are now receiving their first or second dose of the vaccine, these practices to prevent the transmission of the virus cannot be relaxed.

Feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed in these COVID times? Students can reach out to the University Counseling Center for help. UHS also maintains a site with COVID Coping and Resources for students. Employees can contact the UR Medicine Employee Assistance Program, one of several support services for faculty and staff.

Kate Nearpass named assistant vice president and Title IX coordinator

Catherine (Kate) Nearpass has been named assistant vice president for civil rights and Title IX coordinator in the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI). The dual role was recently created to ensure the University’s continued compliance with its Policy Against Discrimination and Harassment, federal Title IX regulations, and affirmative action obligations. Nearpass will head OEI’s Title IX, equal opportunity, and affirmative action efforts, including complaint investigations, policy work, and education and training.

Vaccinated mothers are trying to give babies antibodies via breast milk

The New York Times, April 8

Research is too premature for vaccinated mothers who are breastfeeding to act as if their babies can’t get infected, says Kirsi Jarvinen-Seppo, the chief of pediatric allergy and immunology and the Founders’ Distinguished Chair in Pediatric Allergy. “There is no direct evidence that the COVID antibodies in breast milk are protecting the infant—only pieces of evidence suggesting that could be the case.”
