TODAY'S UPDATES

No new positive cases of COVID-19

Since Monday’s notice in @Rochester, there are no new cases of COVID-19 to report. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated daily. Whenever a new case is known, the contact-tracing process begins immediately with confirmed exposures being contacted and required to quarantine.

The Medical Center is continuing to make vaccine clinic appointments available to all University faculty, staff, and students. Visit the URMC COVID Clinic List to register.

It’s extremely important for the health of the University community that individuals continue to adhere to the face masking and social distancing protocols. Even as some individuals are now receiving their first or second dose of the vaccine, these practices to prevent the transmission of the virus cannot be relaxed.

Feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed in these COVID times? Students can reach out to the University Counseling Center for help. UHS also maintains a site with COVID Coping and Resources for students. Employees can contact the UR Medicine Employee Assistance Program, one of several support services for faculty and staff.

An update on Rochester’s commencement ceremonies

In a message yesterday to parents of students in the Class of 2021, the 2021 Commencement Committee shared the latest information on this year’s commencement ceremonies. With attendance at commencement ceremonies being limited to graduating students and the University faculty and staff needed to manage commencement events, the update also included information on how students and their families and friends can help share the excitement of the day.

Lynne Maquat awarded the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize

Lynne Maquat, the J. Lowell Orbison Distinguished Service Alumni Professor in biochemistry and biophysics and the director of Rochester’s Center for RNA Biology, has been awarded the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize for her pivotal discoveries in the field of RNA biology.

Medical Center tests new COVID-19 vaccine against South African variant

The Medical Center and Rochester Regional Health have joined national studies to test a vaccine for a new South African variant of the coronavirus. The new vaccine, produced by Pfizer and BioNTech, is a slight twist on the companies’ existing COVID-19 vaccine. The studies are led by Edward Walsh, a professor of medicine, and Ann Falsey, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases and codirector of the Medical Center’s Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit.
