It's commencement weekend (again!)

Rochester’s second weekend of commencement ceremonies begins today, with four ceremonies celebrating the College’s Class of 2021. Ceremonies will be streamed live at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. EDT.

In anticipation of commencement, four members of the Class of 2021 look back on their time at the University, how they’ve grown while on campus, and what the next chapter holds for them. Access the video here.

Additionally, Rich Handler, chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, US Senator Charles Schumer, and University President Sarah Mangelsdorf offer messages to the graduates on the Class of 2021 website.

In today’s issue:

TODAY'S UPDATES

One new positive case of COVID-19

Since Wednesday’s notice in @Rochester, there is one new case of COVID-19 to report: a River Campus employee. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated daily. Whenever a new case is known, the contact-tracing process begins immediately with confirmed exposures being contacted and required to quarantine.

The Medical Center is continuing to make vaccine clinic appointments available to all University faculty, staff, and students. Visit the URMC COVID Clinic List to register.

It’s extremely important for the health of the University community that individuals continue to adhere to the face masking and social distancing protocols. Even as some individuals are now receiving their first or second dose of the vaccine, these practices to prevent the transmission of the virus cannot be relaxed.

Feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed in these COVID times? Students can reach out to the University Counseling Center for help. UHS also maintains a site with COVID Coping and Resources for students. Employees can contact the UR Medicine Employee Assistance Program, one of several support services for faculty and staff.

National student award winners

Each year, Rochester students and recent graduates earn awards in recognition of their academic achievements.

To drill down on anti-Asian hate crimes, Rochester researchers harness social media

In a new study led by Jiebo Luo, a professor of computer science, Rochester researchers examine how information gleaned from Twitter users can be used to document public reaction to attacks on Chinese and other Asians in the US in the wake of COVID-19.

New space opens to study infusion therapies at the Medical Center

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s new Clinical Research Infusion Center is now open, providing a safe space for researchers to test new infusion drugs, like monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, at the Medical Center.

Flags will be lowered for Kristine Zimmerman

University flags will be lowered Thursday, May 27, for Kristine Zimmerman, an outpatient account expeditor in patient financial services, who died on May 7. Zimmerman joined the University staff in 2009.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

What’s the story with brain fog and menopause?

The Seattle Times, May 16

“Growing evidence says this is real,” says Miriam Weber, an associate professor of neurology and of obstetrics and gynecology. “Multiple studies have shown declines in memory and attention,” she says. “What we don’t know is whether it persists. So far it seems like it may be temporary, just through the transition” from perimenopause through menopause.
