TODAY'S UPDATES

There’s hope for objective moral standards—but how can we better live up to them?

In an article in the magazine of science and culture Nautilus, William FitzPatrick, the Gideon Webster Burbank Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, lays out a case for the hope that there is “an objective and universally true human morality,” and considers whether, given the global rise of tribalism and nationalism, “‘the better angels of our nature’ are robust enough to create and sustain a better world.”

Annual cleaning of hospital garage begins this weekend

The annual cleaning and maintenance of Strong Memorial Hospital Garage will begin on Friday, June 4. Most of the work will be conducted over two weekends in June. Parkers can expect brief interruptions to garage access and parking areas during these times:

  • from noon Friday, June 4, through Sunday, June 6, the East Drive entrance and floors 2, 4, and 6 will be closed. The Jackson Drive and South Drive entrances will remain open.
  • from noon Friday, June 11, through Sunday, June 13, the Jackson Drive entrance, South Drive entrance, and floors G,1,3, and 5 will be closed. The East Drive entrance will remain open.

Signage will be placed on roadways directing patients and visitors to available entrances. Staff is encouraged to park in College Town Garage to leave space for patients and visitors. If you have questions, call the Parking Management Center at (585) 275-4524.

Flags will be lowered for Olga Dutko

University flags will be lowered Thursday, June 10, for Olga Dutko, a registered nurse in imaging sciences and ambulatory nursing at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on May 8. Dutko joined the University staff in 2017.

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Workshop series on supporting student mental health

It’s been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic came to the United States, and since then, Rochester faculty and staff have adapted to online pedagogies and have been key supports for University students as they navigate not only their academics but also their mental health. In response to the stressors that students have faced in the past year, the Mindful University Project is hosting “Supporting the Mental Health of Students during the 2021–22 Academic Year,” a workshop series to provide faculty and staff the opportunity to engage in a productive dialogue on topics related to mental health. Participants will leave with practical strategies they can add to their toolbox to meet students where they are at, support students’ mental health, and navigate any challenges that may arise in the upcoming semester. The series begins Wednesday, June 9, at noon EDT. This series is open to all University faculty and staff. Registration is required.
