University among first to join White House COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge

The University has joined the White House COVID-19 College Vaccine Challenge, a new national initiative organized by the White House, US Department of Education, and the American College Health Association that seeks to galvanize colleges and universities to help increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake among the 18- to 24-year-old population. The challenge is aimed at reaching students where they are to encourage them to get vaccinated before the new academic year begins.

Laser experiments demonstrate ‘helium rain’ likely falls in the solar system

An international research team, including scientists from the University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, have validated a nearly 40-year-old prediction and experimentally shown that helium rain is possible inside planets such as Jupiter and Saturn.

Apply for an open education grant

Starting Friday, June 25, the River Campus Libraries will begin accepting applications for grants that support the development and implementation of open educational resources and open pedagogy on the River Campus. Anyone who is teaching or supporting student learning can apply, and applications will be accepted until funding is exhausted. Examples of qualifying projects include creating open education texts and relicensing existing teaching content to be openly licensed. Find more information here. Additionally, you can access a recording of an informational session or attend a virtual Q&A on Tuesday, June 15, from 11 a.m. to noon EDT.

Mindfulness in June

If you are looking to learn about mindfulness and meditation or deepen your current practice, the Mindful University Project is offering a variety of sessions this month on its Instagram account. Each meditation will be 15–20 minutes long and will occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
