Last week, the federal Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the drug aducanumab to treat Alzheimer’s disease. The Medical Center’s Alzheimer’s Disease Care Research and Education Program was involved in one of Biogen’s phase three clinical trials for the drug and provided pivotal data in the studies that eventually led to its approval. Find more details on aducanumab in Today’s Updates.

What we know about the new FDA-approved drug to treat Alzheimer’s disease

Aducanumab was approved last week by the federal Food and Drug Administration to treat Alzheimer’s disease, making it the first new drug in nearly 20 years to treat the disease. Anton Porsteinsson, the William and Sheila Konar Endowed Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, Neuroscience, and Medicine, and the director of the Medical Center’s Alzheimer’s Disease Care Research and Education Program, shares his insight on the drug and what it means for the disease that afflicts nearly six million Americans.

CTSI career development awardees tackle hypertension, GI health, and suicide prevention

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s KL2 Career Development Award provides two years of funding for early-stage researchers and sets the stage for further career development (K-award) or research (R-award) applications. Learn more about this year’s awardees, who will study adolescent suicide prevention and novel ways to assess intestine function and cardiac health.

Flags will be lowered for Kathleen McGarvey

University flags will be lowered Thursday, June 24, for Kathleen McGarvey, a senior associate editor and writer in University Communications, who died on June 2. McGarvey joined the University staff in 2001.

The next “Lunch and Listen” concert from Eastman Performing Arts Medicine and the Office of Patient Experience takes place today, Tuesday, June 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT. Medical Center staff and clinical workers can join via Zoom and call in to make requests. This week’s concert features guitarist Patrick Peralta, currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the Eastman School of Music, who brings repertoire from renaissance lute and guitar music to pop standards from artists like the Beatles.
