TODAY’S UPDATES

Security Tip: Secure login and file transfer

Secure shell (SSH) and secure file transfer protocol (SFTP) encrypt communications across networks, meaning your files cannot be read by third parties while in transit. SSH is used for running remote systems and SFTP allows for the secure transfer of files. If you are required to transfer files regularly or run commands on remote systems, University IT recommends the use of SSH and SFTP to provide confidentiality and protect data. As always, securing your login credentials with the use of two-factor authentication is recommended to further protect your data. Find out more and download SSH and SFTP software.

New library search platform launches today

At one time you may have referred to the University of Rochester Libraries’ search and discovery function as “Articles, Books, and More,” “Summon,” or maybe “the catalog.” Now, it’s simply DiscoverUR, and it will be live as of 9 a.m. EDT today. This is a new and more robust platform that promises improved overall functionality. However, the staff is still actively working to fully integrate the software, so please be prepared for minor and temporary disruptions. Find more information and updates on DiscoverUR here.

How close are we to the holy grail of room-temperature superconductors?

Forbes, July 7

As described in Nature, Ranga Dias, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and of physics and astronomy, and his colleagues mixed hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen, and methane under extreme pressures and were able to create a material—a “photochemically transformed carbonaceous sulfur hydride system”—that shattered the temperature record for superconductors.
