Staff members make important contributions to the campus community year-round—but during the COVID-19 pandemic, their impact was magnified. Over the past year, staff have worked to keep the University’s campuses safe, putting in untold hours to continue moving the institution’s learning and research missions forward. Meet the recipients of the 2021 President’s Staff Awards in Today’s Updates.

In a challenging year, staff efforts shine through

This year’s President’s Staff Awards honor several people and groups who went above and beyond during the past year.

Meliora Award honorees are Wen Li, the Post-Anesthesia Response Unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, Strong Memorial Hospital Employee Health Services, and the University Health Service Primary Care and Health Promotion Office.

Shayne Hawkins is the recipient of the inaugural Lamar Riley Murphy Leadership Award.

The Witmer Award for Distinguished Service has been awarded to Donald DiVita, Eileen Pullara, and Maria Romana.

Jacquelyn McGriff is the recipient of this year’s Staff Community Service Award.

Additionally, the 2020 Award, a special one-time honor being awarded this year, recognizes employees across the University for their extraordinary and heroic response to the COVID-19 crisis. The three teams receiving the 2020 Award are the Coronavirus University Restart Team (CURT)University Emergency Operations Command (EOC), and Medical Center Command Center (CC).

“Within a few generations, I think it is possible to have people living and working in space if we can handle these crucial climate issues on earth,” says Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Together with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Frank offered live commentary on yesterday’s suborbital space flight.

Data science summer 2021 colloquium series

Join the Goergen Institute for Data Science on Wednesday, July 21, for “On the Deployment of Predictive Models in Health Care: Case Studies of Hospital Readmission and ED Severe Sepsis and Decompensation,” a research seminar with Louis Ehwerhemuepha, a senior data scientist at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. This free, virtual talk will be held from noon to 1 p.m. EDT on Zoom. Register online to attend.

Webinar on the behavioral health assessment officer model

Join the UR Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence on Tuesday, August 10, at 11 a.m. EDT for a discussion focused on the behavioral health needs in rural emergency departments and how the behavioral health assessment officer model can be used to increase access to mental health and substance use disorder care in these communities.

For Nate Mulberg ’14, baseball and his Jewish heritage have played significant roles in his life—personally and professionally. Now the two will come together as he represents Team Israel as an assistant baseball coach at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
