Good morning, Rochester

TODAY’S UPDATES

One new positive case of COVID-19

There is one new case of COVID-19 to report: a River Campus employee. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is known. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here

University students: please remember to upload your proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the UHS secure portal.

Security Tip: Benefits of encrypting your device

A great deal of personal data can be extracted from files you store on your devices. Think of your sensitive information as a puzzle. Hackers can piece together data from your tax return documents, photos (important dates, addresses), travel plans, and application forms to steal your identity. By encrypting your device, cybercriminals can only see scrambled data, which is useless to them. Encryption also protects information should your device be lost or stolen and secures any files you share. Visit University IT’s desktop encryption page for more information on encrypting your desktop. You can also follow these steps to encrypt your personal mobile device.

What’s in store for space travel

CNN, July 21

“There will be opportunities, not to go up as a tourist, but to go up because, you know, you were offered a job on a lunar base, or on a rotating space platform, a hollowed-out asteroid,” says Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, on what might be in store in 50 years’ time for space travel.

The Center for Community Engagement will recognize participants completing two community service programs with upcoming virtual closing ceremonies. The ceremony for Rochester Youth Year is 4 to 6 p.m. EDT on Thursday, July, 29. The ceremony for Rochester Urban Fellows is noon to 2 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 30. Both programs are supported by grants from AmeriCorps. Learn more about each program at the links above.

Interested in participating in health research?

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute supports a local registry of individuals who are interested in taking part in future research studies. If you are interested in being included on this list, researchers may contact you in the future to ask you to take part in a research study. If you are contacted, you can decide at that time whether or not you want to participate in the clinical study. Sign up online. You can also join ResearchMatch, a national registry.
