A history of sustainability at Rochester

The University approaches sustainability from a grassroots perspective, addressing each of the pillars of society, environment, and economics in some ways that are not apparent. This month’s Go Green blog from University Facilities and Services provides a history of sustainability at Rochester, and beyond.

in today’s issue:

  • Communications teams across the University received top marks for their work at this year’s PRism Awards ceremony

Communications projects earn PRSA recognition

Work by communications teams across the University received top marks at this year’s PRism Awards ceremony, the annual celebration of excellence in communications sponsored by the Rochester Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Altogether, Rochester received eight awards, four for University Communications and four for Medical Center Communications.
Taking top honors in their categories were the “Celebration 2020: Visionary Women of Rochester” (events and celebrations), Rochester Review (magazine), @Rochester (newsletter), the opening of the Golisano Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness Building (press conference), and the Medical Center’s “Communicating in Real-Time During the COVID Crisis” (internal communications program). Recognized for excellence were Tower Talk, select news from the University of Rochester Libraries (newsletters), national and local coverage that the Medical Center team generated about a patient who got married in the hospital while awaiting a heart transplant (media relations), and the URMC Newsroom (website).

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

Project launched to look for extraterrestrial visitors to our solar system

Science, July 26

“It’s a reasonable question to ask, has the Earth been visited in its 4.5-billion-year history,” says Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. If we discovered obvious signs of life on nearby exoplanets, we would send probes, he says. “Looking for artifacts [close to home] is a reasonable approach.”

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Vacation payout

Last year, University leadership announced changes to the vacation policy so that employees could roll over one-and-a-quarter (1.25) year’s annual vacation accrual for 2021, recognizing that the pandemic made it difficult for many to take time off. In 2021, vacation balances are continuing to build, with staff using fewer vacation days than in a typical year. To ensure that staff benefit from unused vacation time, the University will implement a one-time vacation payout at the end of 2021. All staff through pay grade 98 will receive a payout of up to 60 hours of unused vacation for time accrued above 1.25 of their annual vacation accrual. Learn more.
