Lunar samples solve mystery of the moon’s supposed magnetic shield
In a paper published in the journal Science Advances, Rochester researchers, leading a team of colleagues at seven other institutions, report their findings on a major factor that influences the types of resources that may be found on the moon: whether or not the moon has had a long-lived magnetic shield at any point in its 4.53 billion-year history. “This is a new paradigm for the lunar magnetic field,” says the paper’s first author John Tarduno, the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Geophysics in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and dean of research for Arts, Sciences & Engineering.

August eyeglasses collection
In conjunction with National Eye Exam Month, University Facilities and Services will be collecting eyeglasses throughout August to be recycled. You can drop off eyeglasses donations at the Flaum Eye Institute (G-3070), Medical Center, send them in any box or envelope through intercampus mail to PO Box 270001, or mail them to University Mail Services, Box 270001, Rochester, NY, 14627-0001.
HOP around with Rochester’s bike-share program
In an effort to provide students, faculty, and staff with an easy, affordable, and healthy way to get where they need to go, the Department of Transportation and Parking has partnered with RTS and the City of Rochester to help launch its new bike-share program. The new system, owned, operated, and maintained by HOPR, a national provider, is debuting with a fleet of 200 pedal bikes throughout the City of Rochester and surrounding areas.
There are two bike stations at the University, located at Meliora Hall and on Faculty Road. The blue HOPR bikes may be rented through a smartphone app. HOPR offers pay-as-you-go options, as well as single-day and monthly passes. For riders using pay-as-you-go, the cost is $1 to unlock a bike and 15 cents per minute of riding. The city is also offering 100 electric scooters through HOPR that may be rented for $1 plus 27 cents per minute. The electric scooters may be used to travel to and from campus, however, they may not operate on University campuses for the safety of riders and pedestrians. They must be parked at designated dismount zones on the campus perimeter.
