TODAY’S UPDATES

Security Tip: Ignoring calls from unknown numbers can protect you from 'vishing' scams

That phone call about your car’s extended warranty expiring, winning a free cruise, or offering discounted utility services has a name: vishing. Similar to email phishing, phone scammers target individuals to trick you into giving your personal information over the phone. Some malicious actors go to great lengths to disguise their phone number and appeal to your emotions with a sense of urgency, like claiming to be a family member in dire need of money. What’s your best defense? University IT says avoid answering calls you do not recognize, don’t answer any questions, and hang up immediately. Report the call immediately to the Federal Trade Commission’s FTC Complaint Assistant. Learn more about scams and how to protect yourself on University IT’s website.

How does the pandemic affect families who were already struggling?

Rochester researchers led by Melissa Sturge-Apple, a professor of psychology as well as the University’s vice provost and dean of graduate education, and Patrick Davies, a professor of psychology, and the University’s Mt. Hope Family Center have been awarded a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study the pandemic’s implications for American families and parenting.

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Online teaching resource workshops

Are you preparing for your fall courses? Do you need help learning how to use Blackboard, how to copy your materials from an old course into a new one, or are you interested in learning how to better organize your course? Register below to participate in these online workshops, and find full course descriptions here.

Public speaking tutoring available during school year

As you look forward to an in-person academic year, think about integrating more public speaking into your class. Students preparing for presentations or seeking to gain confidence contributing to classroom discussions can schedule a one-on-one tutoring session with a speaking fellow—trained undergraduate peer tutors.

The speaking fellows can also be scheduled for short class visits and full-length workshops for classes and groups on campus. For more information on the speaking fellows or for guidance on adding more public speaking instruction and support into your classroom, email Amy Arbogast.
