The Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation at River Campus Libraries recently acquired a lengthy and detailed letter from Confederate spy Rose O’Neal Greenhow to her former friend, Secretary of State William Henry Seward. The letter is part of the department’s collection of William Henry Seward papers.

Written on November 18, 1861, while she was under house arrest, Greenhow uses the letter to complain about her treatment. The letter was published in the Richmond Whig newspaper and was reprinted in the New York Herald, embarrassing the Lincoln administration.
