New tool cuts guesswork about ‘eddy killing’ in oceans

swirling patterns over the ocean

In a new paper, Rochester researchers and colleagues from the Los Alamos National Laboratory document for the first time how the wind, which propels larger currents, has the opposite effect on eddies—circular currents of water—less than 260 kilometers in size. The resulting phenomenon is called “eddy killing.”

TODAY’S UPDATES

What we know about New York State’s health care worker vaccine mandate

UR Medicine leadership participated in a call last week with New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) representatives to gain a better understanding of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo last Monday. At this time, the Medical Center’s understanding is that the mandate will apply to everyone who works within a licensed health care facility. This means that all faculty, staff, and students who work or study in a patient care facility (inpatient, outpatient, and procedure areas) will be required to receive a first dose of the vaccine by the state’s September 27 deadline; testing is no longer an available option per NYSDOH. It also appears that the state will approve limited criteria for medical or religious exemptions.

It remains unclear how the mandate may apply to those who have job duties at our off-site business locations, along with our academic and research areas. However, the University’s previously announced plan to require testing for unvaccinated employees continues for those outside of the NYSDOH health-care worker vaccine mandate.

Read the full update that Medical Center leadership shared with faculty, staff, and students last week. Note: Those outside the Medical Center network will need to use their Active Directory credentials to view the full message on the Medical Center’s intranet.

Security Tip: Over 40 million affected by T-Mobile data breach—watch out for scams

Wireless carrier T-Mobile recently confirmed that it’s fallen victim to a cyberattack in which hackers stole data from more than 40 million people. Driver’s license information, names, birthdays, and social security numbers of current and some former customers have been leaked and posted for sale on the dark web. T-Mobile is working to remedy the situation and contact those affected while offering tips on what you should do in the meantime. Now, more than ever, University IT says customers should be on the lookout for any incoming phishing scams as hackers using the data leaked can make for emails that appear legitimate. Read more on potential scams to watch out for following this cyberattack.

FOR STUDENTS

Institute of International Education emergency student fund

Students affected by either the security emergency in Afghanistan or the earthquake in Haiti are encouraged to apply for the Institute of International Education emergency student fund. This effort will provide one-time grants of between $2,000 and $5,000 to selected students whose ability to pay the costs of their fall 2021 semester in the United States is in jeopardy due to serious financial difficulties related to these crises. Funds can be used to cover the students’ educational, living, or health-related expenses. Apply by August 30; awards should be announced in mid-September. Additional information can be found on the University’s Global Engagement website.
