TODAY’S UPDATES

Microscopic roundworms may be key to understanding survival instinct

Through experiments conducted on microscopic roundworms, Medical Center researchers have found that a signaling system in the brain changes to redirect the behavior of an animal when their survival is at risk because there is not enough food.

Security Tip: FTC warns of scholarship and financial aid scams

If you’re a student looking for scholarships and grants to alleviate the cost of college tuition, the Federal Trade Commission urges you to watch out for scammers who promise financial assistance. These scams often start with social media posts, emails, or a letter in the mail “personally” selecting you as a candidate for their service to receive funds. These high pressured sales pitches often charge you a processing fee to fill out paperwork on your behalf and guarantee your eligibility for additional aid. Falling victim puts you at risk of identity theft and losing money. Learn how to spot the red flags; it could mean saving you from a $20,000 fine or jail time.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

Thanks to a bit of diamond smashing, practical room-temperature superconductivity could be close to reality

Science, August 26

“Any time this kind of paradigm shift happens, people will push back,” says Ranga Dias, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and of physics and astronomy. But Dias and fellow hydride researchers are confident in their observations. And with theoretical predictions and preliminary experimental results both suggesting that dramatically lowering the need for pressure might be possible, the scientists press forward.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

‘Understanding the Gender Wage Gap and How to Prepare for Salary Negotiations’

In recent decades, American women have made significant strides toward economic equality: they make up nearly half the US workforce, and two-thirds of women are their family’s primary or co-breadwinner. Still, men continue to earn more money—and accumulate more wealth—than women do. Join Rachel Roberts ’03E, director of the Institute for Music Leadership and an associate professor of music leadership at the Eastman School of Music, for an interactive workshop to gain a better understanding of the pay gap, learn how to determine your own personal value, and develop techniques for salary negotiation. Register to attend this event on Wednesday, September 1, at noon EDT, cohosted by the Women’s Network.

HOP around with Rochester’s bike-share program

To provide students, faculty, and staff with an easy, affordable, and healthy way to get where they need to go, the Department of Transportation and Parking has partnered with RTS and the City of Rochester to help launch its new bike-share program. The new system, owned, operated, and maintained by HOPR, a national provider, is debuting with a fleet of 200 pedal bikes throughout the City of Rochester and surrounding areas.

There are two bike stations at the University, located at Meliora Hall and on Faculty Road. The blue HOPR bikes may be rented through a smartphone app. HOPR offers pay-as-you-go options, as well as single-day and monthly passes. For riders using pay-as-you-go, the cost is $1 to unlock a bike and 15 cents per minute of riding. The city is also offering 100 electric scooters through HOPR that may be rented for $1 plus 27 cents per minute. The electric scooters may be used to travel to and from campus, however, they may not operate on University campuses for the safety of riders and pedestrians. They must be parked at designated dismount zones on the campus perimeter.

Download the free HOPR Transit app and find more information here. Credit card use is not an option as the entire system is operated through the app. For questions visit the FAQ.
