ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

With 80 percent survival rates, liver transplants offer new hope for some colon cancer patients

Forbes, August 27

“We know that the gold standard treatment for liver metastasis is surgery,” says Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro, a professor of surgery. And, he said, surgery for colorectal metastasis is not experimental. “This is just bringing another option, another way of removing the cancer in a specific selection of patients.”

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Website connects faculty research mentors with undergraduates

Are you looking to recruit undergraduates to participate in a research activity during the fall semester? The Office of Undergraduate Research in collaboration with RocLab, a student software development club, has created AURA, a new website that connects faculty research mentors with interested undergraduates using a simple and intuitive web interface.

AURA allows research mentors to easily advertise research opportunities and identify students who are best qualified for their projects. Positions posted on AURA will be viewable on the Office of Undergraduate Research website and advertised on the office’s social media platforms.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

Learn to meditate

Did you know that daily mindfulness practice can help to decrease perceived stress, and improve quality of sleep, self-compassion, mood, and academic performance in both college and graduate students? Learn the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation during the next Koru mindfulness four-week workshop. Participants will learn about and practice two new meditation techniques weekly, and bring more mindfulness and gratitude into their lives. Four sessions are beginning in early September. Registration is required. This is open to all University students, faculty, and staff, and is brought to you by the Mindful University Project.
