Message outlines guidance on COVID-19 affecting work, academics

In a message sent to faculty, staff, and students yesterday, the University’s interim provost and deans outlined steps to follow if you are infected with COVID-19 or are asked to quarantine because of a family member.

The University will follow guidelines for quarantines and isolation from Monroe County, New York State, and the Centers for Disease Control. Read more about the University’s quarantine and isolation housing for undergraduates in Today’s Updates.

Provost search update

Progress is being made in the search for the University’s next Provost and Chief Academic Officer.

“The search committee has been impressed by the excellence and diversity of the candidate pool so far,” says search committee chair Mark Taubman, CEO of the Medical Center and Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. “It’s a testament to the strong reputation of our institution, and especially our faculty and research programs, that so many accomplished scholars have expressed real enthusiasm about the position. Candidates are very interested in contributing to the forward momentum of the University of Rochester under President Mangelsdorf’s leadership.”

The search, which is being coordinated by Isaacson Miller, will move into the next stage this fall. “We’re very appreciative of the input we received through the survey and town hall from members of the community about the talents and traits they’d like to see in our next provost,” says Taubman. “We are keeping these criteria in mind as the search progresses.”

Students find care and comfort in quarantine and isolation housing

As classes begin and students embrace the in-person experiences of the fall semester, the University has reestablished its quarantine and isolation plan to ensure that every undergraduate who needs to enter into this space is cared for and comfortable. With new variants, breakthrough COVID-19 infections for those who are vaccinated are rare, but still possible, and therefore the University continues to provide quarantine and isolation housing in an effort to contain all infections and limit the spread of illness.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

Overdose awareness: why it matters

Forbes, August 31

International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31 “draws attention to drug overdose and reminds people what they can do to prevent these unnecessary deaths,” says Kevin Fiscella, a professor of family medicine. Fiscella adds that widespread availability of naloxone kits and encouraging those experiencing addiction to seek treatment are critical early steps.
