Jeffrey McCune Jr. returns to Rochester to lead Frederick Douglass Institute
A former postdoctoral fellow at the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies, Jeffrey McCune Jr., an award-winning scholar on issues of race, gender, and identity, started his new role as the institute’s director on June 1. In a recent Q-and-A, McCune discussed the importance of Black studies as well as his plans to expand the scope of the institute at the University and in communities beyond the campus.

Drop-in counseling groups for September
The University Counseling Center offers the following drop-in groups via Zoom throughout September:
As was previously communicated, the University is instituting a COVID-19 vaccination requirement for all faculty and staff effective September 27. Additionally, New York State recently passed a mandate for health care workers, which covers many of the University’s employees.
The full details of the University’s requirement are now available through the COVID-19 health care provider vaccination policy (#164), which applies to those individuals at the Medical Center covered by the state mandate and the COVID-19 vaccine policy (#165) for all other employees, including additional clarity for employees looking to request an exemption.
‘Lunch and Listen’ program for Medical Center staff and clinical workers features sound meditation
The next “Lunch and Listen” concert from Eastman Performing Arts Medicine and the Office of Patient Experience takes place today, September 7, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. Medical Center staff and clinical workers can join via Zoom and call in to make requests. This week’s concert features multi-instrumentalist Adrian DiMatteo ’12E ’13 (T5) who will lead a sound meditation.

The “Healing Through the Arts and Humanities” series is a collaboration of the Division of Medical Humanities and Bioethics, Eastman Performing Arts Medicine, and several Rochester community organizations. The Department of Psychiatry’s Collaborative Care and Wellness Division’s sixth annual Behavioral Health Integration Symposium begins on Friday, September 17. Learn to meditate
Did you know that daily mindfulness practice can help to decrease perceived stress, and improve quality of sleep, self-compassion, mood, and academic performance in both college and graduate students? Learn the fundamentals of mindfulness meditation during the next Koru mindfulness four-week workshop. Participants will learn about and practice two new meditation techniques weekly, and bring more mindfulness and gratitude into their lives. Four sessions are beginning in early September. Registration is required. This is open to all University students, faculty, and staff, and is brought to you by the Mindful University Project.
