Two new positive cases of COVID-19

There are two new cases of COVID-19 to report: two River Campus employees. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is known. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

Harl Tolbert to lead URVentures

Harl Tolbert will become associate vice president of URVentures effective October 8. Tolbert was previously the associate director of the Medical Center’s Office of Technology Transfer, the original name for URVentures.

Upcoming COVID-19 vaccination clinics

Employee Health is hosting COVID-19 vaccination clinics for University faculty, staff, students, and volunteers. All clinics are located in Cafe 601 North End, Strong Memorial Hospital.

UR Financials, UR Procurement, and UR Student get an upgrade

The UR Financials and UR Procurement systems are scheduled to be upgraded Saturday, September 11. UR Procurement will be unavailable from Friday, September 10, at 9 p.m. EDT through Sunday, September 12, at 8 a.m. The upgrade is not expected to affect Procure to Pay (P2P) users. Send questions via email or call (585) 275-2012.

UR Student is also being upgraded on Saturday, September 11, and will also be unavailable from Friday, September 10, at 9 p.m. EDT through Sunday, September 12, at 8 a.m. Additional outage schedules can be found online. Email the Help Desk, call (585) 275-2000, or submit a ticket if you experience any issues with the upgrade.

“There are numerous environmental factors, including pesticides and paraquat (an herbicide), as well as other chemicals that have been linked to the disease,” says Ray Dorsey, the David M. Levy Professor of Neurology and director of the Center for Health and Technology at the Medical Center.

‘Building a Better Graduate Education: Overcoming Resistance and Finding Allies’

In their recent book, The New PhD: How to Build a Better Graduate Education, Leonard Cassuto and Robert Weisbuch seek to overturn conventional wisdom in a clarion call for student-centered, career-diverse graduate education. The Greene Center for Career Education and Connections will host a virtual conversation with the authors on Thursday, September 9, from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. EDT. Learn about reference managers

Get your semester off to an organized start. On Friday, September 10, the River Campus Libraries is holding a virtual workshop from noon to 1 p.m. EDT that will introduce you to Zotero, Endnote, Refworks, and Mendely—four easy-to-use tools that allow you to keep track of your articles, books, websites, and other sources you need. Drop-in hours are available if you can’t make it or need more help.

Retirement plan changes

The University is making enhancements to the retirement 403(b) program and deferred compensation 457(b) plan scheduled to take effect on or about September 27 to the investment options available. You should have recently received an email or letter outlining the investment option changes, or you can visit tiaa.org/Rochester for more information. Need help with your retirement goals? EAP supervisor series kicks off

The fall 2021 UR Medicine EAP supervisor series kicks off with the first virtual session, “Using EAP in Supervision,” on Wednesday, September 15, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. This session is for all managers and will provide an overview of EAP as well as help improve your ability to recognize employees having personal problems that are adversely affecting performance. September 11 vigil today

Naval, Air Force, and Army ROTC units will stand vigil today, September 8, from 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. on the Eastman Quad in remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Sawyer Seminar opening reception

The Humanities Center invites faculty, staff, and students to celebrate the start of its yearlong Sawyer Seminar series on “Unbordering Migration: Causes, Experiences, Identities” at a wine-and-cheese reception on Thursday, September 9, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Humanities Center lounge, on the second floor of Rush Rhees Library. Greet one another and learn about upcoming events, which include lectures, panel discussions, seminars, and film screenings. Masks are required and tables will be positioned throughout the center’s well-ventilated, large space in accordance with safety precautions.

Talk: ‘Helping Students Fall in Love with Greater Rochester’

The Center for Community Engagement will host representatives from CampusROC, an initiative that aims to help local college students break out of the campus bubble and into the vibrant local culture and connect with lucrative and meaningful career opportunities. Attend this event, the latest in the Breaking the Bubble series, on Monday, September 13, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. EDT at the Red Tea House, 960 Genesee Street.

Grand rounds lecture on leveraging electronic health record to address health inequities

The next public health grand rounds lecture will take place Friday, September 17, at noon EDT. Heather Busick, an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics and of clinical medicine, will present “The Heart of the Matter: Leveraging Our Electronic Health Record to Address Health Inequities.” Pre-registration is required. Mindful Practice in Medicine Core Workshop

The “Mindful Practice in Medicine Core Workshop: Find Joy and Resilience, and Enhance Quality of Care” was developed by physicians to help medical practitioners and educators respond to the erosion of joy in their work. It provides an experiential and interactive learning environment. The workshop takes place October 27–30 at the Chapin Mill Retreat Center in Batavia; learn more and register online. Discounted registration fees end on September 15.
