Managing back-to-school anxiety for parents, teachers, and students

After 18 months of disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic, a majority of children in America are returning to full-time school for the first time since March 2020. Melissa Heatly, an assistant professor of psychiatry, Shaun Nelms ’04W (MS), ’13W (EdD), superintendent of Rochester’s East Upper and Lower Schools, and Leah Hill, a clinical engagement specialist at the Medical Center’s Strong Recovery program, share advice for parents, teachers, kids, and administrators on managing their anxiety.

In today’s issue:

  • Remembering the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks
  • Club Rochester returns today
  • The 65th M&T Bank Clothesline Festival takes place this weekend at the Memorial Art Gallery

20 years later, remembering September 11

three uniformed students stand with an American flag on Eastman Quadrangle

On Wednesday, Naval, Air Force, and Army ROTC units—including Naval ROTC midshipmen Jake Kolmetz (of SUNY Brockport), Claire Aikens ’22, and Samantha Ellrich ’25—stood vigil on Eastman Quadrangle to mark the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Among the nearly 3,000 people who died during the attacks were six Rochester alumni: Brendan Dolan ’86, Jeremy Glick ’93, Aram Iskendarian ’82, Joan Hoadley Peterson ’69N, Jeffrey Smith ’87, ’88S (MBA), and Zhe (Zack) Zheng ’95, ’98S (MBA).

Ellen Bakalian, the widow of Jeffrey Smith, wrote “Everything My Husband Wasn’t There For,” an essay for The Atlantic in 2019, which was reprinted with permission in the summer 2021 issue of Rochester Review.

AlertUR test set for September 16

The fall semester test of AlertUR will be on Thursday, September 16, at 6 p.m. EDT. AlertUR is the emergency notification system for the University, including the Medical Center. In the event of an emergency, alerts are sent by voice, text, and email message. The purpose of the test is to activate the AlertUR system and check that you can be reached immediately. Before the September 16 test, students and employees should review their contact information online. Sign in with your NetID and password to verify the fastest method for reaching you, including adding a current cell phone number. Employees with a NetID who do not have a University email address may enter a personal email or phone number to receive emergency alerts. The September 16 test will not disrupt scheduled activities. Find more information on AlertUR here.

MERT evaluation looks at ways to grow, strengthen operations

The Medical Emergency Response Team, a River Campus student organization in place since 1972, has paused its responses to calls while it undergoes evaluation. During this evaluation, the team’s active responses to student calls are being paused, but all other group activities will continue, including the training that its members undertake to be medically certified responders.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

COVID cases among children are surging in the US as students head back to school

The Guardian (US), September 9

“It’s very important for children who are eligible to be vaccinated,” says Mary Caserta, a professor of pediatrics. “There’s just no other way to protect ourselves right now except using vaccination along with mitigation—wearing masks, washing our hands, trying to maintain our social distance. We all need to be vigilant about making sure we’re using all of the tools available to protect ourselves, to protect our community.”

Deadline extended for Institute of International Education emergency student fund

Students affected by either the security emergency in Afghanistan or the earthquake in Haiti are encouraged to apply for the Institute of International Education emergency student fund. This effort will provide one-time grants of between $2,000 and $5,000 to selected students whose ability to pay the costs of their fall 2021 semester in the United States is in jeopardy due to serious financial difficulties related to these crises. Funds can be used to cover the students’ educational, living, or health-related expenses. The deadline to apply has been extended to September 15. Additional information can be found on the University’s Global Engagement website.
