ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

This desert valley is home to 500 bee species, a world record

National Geographic, September 21

In a recent paper published in the Journal of Hymenoptera Research, Bob Minckley, a professor of instruction in the Department of Biology, and Bill Radke, manager of the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge, found that 497 species of bees live within just over six square miles of the San Bernardino Valley, a modest area for such a study—10 times smaller than Washington, DC. “The density of bees there is astronomical—far and away higher than anywhere else in the world that’s been carefully studied,” says Minckley.

Complete harassment and discrimination training in MyPath by September 30

Find more information online including frequently asked questions about the training and additional opportunities for online and in-person training.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

‘Unequal Access: Transforming Rochester’s Food Deserts’

Food deserts are communities with limited access to affordable or high-quality fresh food, either because of inequity in the distribution of grocery stores or lack of transportation to them. These inequities mean healthy food is often unavailable to substantial portions of the community, often low-income people or people of color, leaving them with unhealthy, processed food choices. Join the Susan B. Anthony Center for a webinar on Thursday, September 30, from 4 to 5 p.m. EDT to learn about these food distribution issues as well as potential solutions to solve food inequities. Also discussed will be the newly formed Rochester Food Policy Council, created with the mandate of improving access to healthy food in our city. Learn more and register here.

Nominations open for undergraduate Women’s Leadership Awards

The Susan B. Anthony Center is accepting nominations for the University’s 2021–22 Women’s Leadership Awards. Five awards are presented annually to undergraduate women in recognition of their achievements, service, and contributions to the common good. Find more information and submit a nomination. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, October 6.
