TODAY’S UPDATES

One new positive case of COVID-19

There is one new case of COVID-19 to report: a River Campus employee. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

A reminder on face masks: they must be worn properly covering the nose and mouth indoors on the University’s campuses and properties. Visit the face mask FAQ page for full information. Face masks with air valves are not permitted, nor are face shields alone without a proper face mask underneath.

Library Road closure and shuttle service change today

From noon to midnight today, Frederico Construction will repair a water main on Library Road, and the sidewalk will be closed and rerouted through Fauver Stadium. Single lane alternating traffic on Library Road will start at noon with a full road closure at 6 p.m. The shuttle bus stop will be temporarily relocated to Wilson Blvd. at Library Road during the road closure from 6 p.m. to midnight. Work is expected to be completed by midnight, and regular shuttle service will resume. Contact John Welch at (585) 275-8931 or jwelch24@facilities.rochester.edu with questions.

Roc STAR Center pilot award recipients

The Rochester Roybal Center for Social Ties and Aging Research, a Medical Center research center focused on promoting the social well-being and healthy aging of those caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia, announces the recipients of the 2021 pilot awards, cosponsored with the UR Aging Institute.

Wendy Fritz named inaugural ISO associate director

The International Services Office announces Wendy Fritz as its inaugural associate director. Fritz will lead the office’s collaborative programming to support all international students through innovative programs that engage them with the University and the greater Rochester community. She will conduct regular assessments of the international student experience and utilize data to develop an evidence-based programming strategy that ensures a transformative experience. Flags will be lowered for Tisha Green

University flags will be lowered Tuesday, October 12, for Tisha Green, a nutrition assistant in food and nutrition services (patients), who died on September 5. Green joined the University staff in 1998.


FOR STUDENTS

Depression screenings

On Thursday, October 7, University Counseling Center will conduct drop-in depression screenings for students at Eastman Student Living Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and in the Friel Lounge in Susan B. Anthony Halls on the River Campus from 2 to 4 p.m. Stop by the screening tables to pick up a quick form, then meet with a UCC staff member who can help you see if you are at risk for depression and, if appropriate, offer suitable recommendations to help. You can also learn self-care practices to help you thrive. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Hosted by the University Counseling Center and UHS Health Promotion Office.

Share your thoughts on the University’s strategic planning efforts

As work begins on developing a University-wide strategic plan, focus groups for students, faculty, and staff will be held on Zoom in the coming weeks. Find the full schedule of focus group meetings, which cover five different pathways. Hour-long sessions this week include:

Latinx Alumni Network celebration and discussion

Join Rochester alumni and friends in recognition of Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month for an event on Thursday, October 7, at noon EDT. The virtual event includes a performance from Elvis Vasquez ’23, vice president of the Spanish and Latino Students’ Association (SALSA), and University updates from Mercedes Ramírez Fernández, the Richard Feldman Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer. There will also be dedicated time to connect, build community, and share suggestions for the future of the group. Learn more and register here.

College Music Society Conference

This year’s College Music Society Conference, cosponsored by the Eastman School of Music, will take place October 7–9 at the Riverside Convention Center and at the Eastman School. Inspired by the topic “Leading Change,” this year’s conference deals with the philosophy and practice of music as an integral part of higher education. Find full conference details here.

Three showcase concerts will take place in Hatch Recital Hall, free to the Eastman community with ID. On Saturday, October 9, musician Awadagin Pratt will take part in two events in Kilbourn Hall: “An Eastman Conversation with Awadagin Pratt,” from noon to 1 p.m.; and the final keynote address, “Awadagin Pratt: Black in America,” from 3 to 4 p.m.

Bernard Guyer Lecture addresses first at-home HIV test

The 10th annual Bernard Guyer Lecture in Public Health is partnering with public health grand rounds for an event on Friday, October 15, at noon EDT. Abigail Zuger, an infectious disease expert and retired senior attending physician at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside Hospitals, will present “Public Health at the Bathroom Sink: Home Testing for Contagious Disease.” Zuger will explore the specifics of the home HIV test’s long journey to market and some of the larger lessons for today.​ This year’s virtual event is presented in partnership with the Center for Community Health & Prevention, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Departments of Medicine, Public Health Sciences, and Pediatrics. iGEM fundraiser supports sepsis project

The University’s iGEM team, a group of 12 undergraduate students competing in an international synthetic biology competition, is hosting a virtual 5K run/walk fundraiser throughout October. The funds will support the team’s project to develop a wearable device that will allow for continuous monitoring of different biomarkers in sweat and allow for real-time readout and timely diagnosis of sepsis.
