‘High risk’ project uses quantum science to unlock new chemical reactions

Todd Krauss, a professor of chemistry and of optics, will lead a multi-institution effort to transform the field of chemistry. Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, Krauss and his fellow researchers want to use light to facilitate previously impossible chemical reactions—in essence, by turning light into a catalyst.

Nine new positive cases of COVID-19

There are nine new cases of COVID-19 to report: six River Campus students and three Medical Campus students. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

A reminder on face masks: they must be worn properly covering the nose and mouth indoors on the University’s campuses and properties. Visit the face mask FAQ page for full information. Face masks with air valves are not permitted, nor are face shields alone without a proper face mask underneath.

Research explores mental illness and suicide among physicians

Ronald Epstein, a professor of family medicine, and other researchers are unpacking how mental illness affects health care professions and the barriers to receiving treatment.

Is my immunity waning? Doctors advise Pfizer vaccine recipients not to worry

CNN, October 10

“I think that we expect that immunity will slowly wane, over time, but it’s not a reason for people to panic,” says Ann Falsey, a professor of medicine and infectious diseases and codirector of the Medical Center’s Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit. “It’s not like suddenly one day you’re completely susceptible like you were before you were vaccinated.”


FOR STUDENTS

Undergraduate student employee training due Friday

In compliance with the New York state law, all University undergraduate student employees are required to complete training on how to recognize and respond to instances of sexual misconduct. Additionally, students who have been identified due to their role as an athlete or a student leader in a club or organization are required to complete the training. The training is administered online by a company called EVERFI, and must be completed by all student employees each academic calendar year. The deadline to complete the training is Friday, October 15. If the course has not been completed by that date, student employees will not be permitted to work until the course has been completed. All undergraduate student employees hired prior to September 7 are required to take this training.

Morning yoga flow

Soak up some sun in the morning with mindful movement on the Wilson Commons Porch. Bring yourself, some water, and meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 16. This session is hosted by the Mindful University Project and is open to all University undergraduate and graduate students. Sign up on CCC.

Participate in professional development writing challenge

The Office of the Provost and the Office of Equity and Inclusion encourage Rochester faculty, staff, and graduate students to participate in a 14-day writing challenge beginning Monday, October 18, offered by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. As an institutional member of the center, the University joins universities across the country to support research productivity and work-life balance through a core curriculum and guest webinars focused on reducing burnout and developing anti-oppressive communities, as well as other types of resources and support. As part of the University’s institutional membership, individual membership is free; register online to join. You must be registered as a member to participate in the writing challenge. Registration for the challenge closes Wednesday, October 13. For more information email equityandinclusion@rochester.edu.

‘Warner Wednesday’ talk on how experiences of trauma affect college students

Attend the next “Warner Wednesday” talk, “Traversing the Shadow Space: College Student Experiences of Campus Spaces after Trauma,” presented by Tricia Shalka, an assistant professor in higher education at the Warner School of Education. Faculty-led reading and discussion program on reimagining societies after crisis

Join the Humanities Center for a faculty-led virtual reading and discussion program, “Looking Forward: Reimagining Lives and Societies after Crisis.” The six-session program will explore not only the individual and social consequences of COVID-19, but also the new visions of human existence inspired by other departures from the “normal,” such as war, revolution, migration, and economic change. The program begins Wednesday, October 13, at 7 p.m. EDT and runs once a week through November 18. Participants may attend as few or as many sessions as they choose. Learn more and register here. Talk: ‘Fostering Accessible Play through Community Engagement’

Join Calvin Eaton from 540WMain and Suzan Hoffman ’22 (T5) for a conversation about how a lot in Rochester’s 19th Ward neighborhood is being transformed into an accessible play space and sensory garden. The project is part of a co-creation process with Rochester community members and other partners, including 540WMain, the Barbara J. Burger iZone, the 19th Ward Community Association, and the Center for Community Engagement. The talk, “Fostering Accessible Play through Community Engagement,” takes place Monday, October 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Red Tea House, 912 Genesee Street, and is part of the “Breaking the Bubble” series.

‘Startup Bytes’ talk with finance and business innovators

The next event in the “Startup Bytes” digital brown bag lunch series, hosted by the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship, takes place Friday, October 22, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. Simon Business School student Brittany Floyd ’22 (MBA) will interview Sandra Gault ’94S (MBA), Theresa Mazzullo, and Myneco Ramirez, professionals in the startup industry who have a focus on funding, founding, or finances. Learn about the challenges founders face while looking for investors, tips for pitching to investors, and what funders look for when making investments.
