PEN America Literary Awards longlist two poetry translations with Rochester ties
Two books with ties to the University have been longlisted for the 2022 PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, which recognizes book-length translations of poetry from any language into English. Everything I Don’t Know, the English-language debut of Jerzy Ficowski’s poetry, was translated from the Polish by Jennifer Grotz, a professor of English, and Piotr Sommer, the Polish poet, critic, and editor. Catcalling, written by Lee Soho and translated from the Korean by Soje, was published by Open Letter Books, the University’s nonprofit literary translation press.

Temporary Library Road closure starts Monday
Starting on Monday, December 20, Utilities and Energy Management will be making repairs to the chilled water system along Library Road in front of Rush Rhees Library. Library Road will be closed to through traffic and Susan B. Anthony Drive will be inaccessible. The roads will remain closed through January 7.
There will be local traffic access to Fauver Stadium, the Goergen Athletic Center, and the loading docks at Frederick Douglas Commons.
The Rush Rhees Library stop for winter recess shuttle routes will be inaccessible during winter break. The temporary stop will be on Intercampus Drive at Library Road.
Pedestrian crosswalks at Library Road and Susan B. Anthony Drive will be closed. All other pedestrian paths will be open.
Grub Hub traffic for Susan B. Anthony will be temporarily rerouted to go through Library Lot, and signage will be in place for directional guidance.
Rochester scientists reveal the limits of machine learning for hydrogen models
Metallic hydrogen is rare on earth, but it is found in large quantities in the interiors of planets such as Jupiter. New research at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics provides more accurate data on hydrogen’s phase transition to metallic hydrogen, which will help in building more accurate computer models.

Graduate student wellness survey
The Graduate Student Wellness Committee, formed this past year, is planning its programs and initiatives for the spring semester. Current Rochester graduate students are encouraged to participate in this survey to help the committee effectively create programs that will meet your needs. University employees can elect to receive their W-2 forms electronically. Consenting to receive your Form W-2 electronically eliminates the possibility of your W-2 statement being misplaced or lost in the mail. By consenting, you will receive notification in January via email when your W-2 is available to view or print. To consent, log in to HRMS and go to Self Service > Payroll and Compensation > W-2/W-2c Consent and check the box to consent and submit by January 7. Individuals who previously consented to receive their W-2 statements electronically do not need to consent again. If you have not consented by January 7 to receive your W-2 electronically, your W-2 will be mailed to your mailing address indicated in HRMS. To verify and update your address in HRMS, go to Self Service > Personal Information > Personal Details. Address updates need to be completed by January 13. Your 2022 benefits confirmation statement arrives this month
You will receive your benefits confirmation statement by the end of the month in the mail. Keep it in a safe place to review details on your health and dental elections, including your covered dependents. If you elected to contribute to an HSA or FSA in 2022, those specifics will be included.
The Highland Hospital Business Office will close at 3 p.m. on Thursday, December 23.
Art of Science Competition submissions open January 1
Current students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to start thinking about submissions for the annual Art of Science Competition. Photographs, illustrations, visualizations, renderings, and posters showing an artistic representation of science, technology, engineering, math, and sustainability themes should be submitted between January 1 and March 18 via the online submission form. Cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250 will be awarded to winning student entries; all other entries will be eligible for a People’s Choice Award of $250.
