School of Medicine and Dentistry ‘State of the School’ address

Mark Taubman, dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry and Medical Center CEO, will deliver a virtual “State of the School” address today, February 9, at 6 p.m. EST. Learn more about the event, which will be moderated by Jill Weimer ’97, ’06M (PhD).

TODAY’S UPDATES

Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are eight new positive cases among students to report: eight on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

A reminder on face masks: they must be worn properly, covering the nose and mouth, indoors on the University’s campuses and properties. Visit the face mask FAQ page for full information on what kinds of masks are acceptable.


FOR STUDENTS

Writing groups for AS&E undergrads

Do you have writing to do? Do you like working with other people? Undergraduate students in Arts, Sciences & Engineering are invited to join a writing group hosted by the Writing and Speaking Center. Groups are led by writing fellows and meet weekly for two hours. Bring any kind of academic, professional, or creative writing. The writing fellows are hiring

Become part of the writing fellows, a group of undergraduate peer tutors from all backgrounds and any discipline who help with any part of the writing process, and work with any style of writing. If interested, visit the writing fellows table this week in Hirst Lounge. You can also learn more at an upcoming general interest meeting on Thursday, February 10, in Rush Rhees Library, Room G-121, Conference Room A, from 7 to 8 p.m., or virtually via Zoom on Friday, February 11, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. EST. The application closes at 4 p.m. EST on February 25.

Learn more about Art New York program

The Art New York program offers students credit for an internship in New York City that situates their program of study within the art world. Students in the program do not need to be art majors or minors and no previous art experience is required. The application deadline for the spring 2023 program is April 15. Learn more at an in-person information session at Sage Art Center on Tuesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Register for Creative Collision Challenge

Registration is now open for the Creative Collision Challenge, a one-day competition bringing together students from diverse backgrounds and programs to brainstorm solutions to social and cultural issues. Teams are guided by mentors and experts to devise an action plan, which is then presented to a panel of judges. Top teams earn cash prizes. The Challenge is open to all University students from any school, program, and class year and takes place Friday, February 18, from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Studio X in Carlson Library. Lunch will be provided. This year’s Challenge will tackle the future of work in relation to student services and technology solutions. Students will receive their team assignments and the problem statement the night before the Challenge. Register online by February 10 and contact Heidi Mergenthaler with questions.

Deadline to submit staff award nominations is February 16

You have one more week to nominate an outstanding colleague for the annual President’s Staff Awards: The Witmer Award for Distinguished Service, Meliora Award, the Staff Community Service Award, and the Lamar Riley Murphy Leadership Award. Submit your nomination online and learn more about each award here.

Office of Equity and Inclusion call for Faculty Success Program fellows and mentors

The Office of Equity and Inclusion is providing research faculty and tenure-line faculty the opportunity to participate in its 2022 National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Faculty Success Program for fellows and mentors. The program will support a cohort of fellows and mentors across the University. The deadline to apply is  March 1. Learn more here.

Careers in Data Science: Erika Ramsdale

Join the Goergen Institute for Data Science for Careers in Data Science with Erika Ramsdale ’21 (MS). Ramsdale, an associate professor of medicine, is a dual-trained and boarded geriatrician and oncologist, National Institutes of Health-funded researcher, and has a clinical practice treating older adults with gastrointestinal malignancies through Highland Hospital. Learn about her career path, work projects, and tips for a career in medicine and data science. The virtual talk takes place Friday, February 11, at 11 a.m. EST.

Nominations for the 2021–22 Student Life Awards

The annual Student Life Awards recognize undergraduate students in the College who—through service to others, investment of talent and time, and pursuit of excellence—have significantly and positively affected the University and surrounding community. Nominations are open through February 11. Review the available awards and submit nominations online. The awards are sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students in the College.


WELLNESS WEDNESDAY

Mental health fair at Eastman

Mental health is as important as your physical health and taking time for yourself is an important part of growing as an artist and scholar. The Health Promotion Office is hosting a mental health fair on Thursday, February 17, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on the second floor of the Eastman School of Music. Enjoy wellness activities and giveaways and meet groups from the campus and the community including Active Minds, Mindful University Project, the National Alliance of Mental Illness, the CARE Network, and UR Connected.

Before or after you get connected to people and groups, take a yoga class from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Registration for yoga is required.

The Health Promotion Office has revamped its website to include new programs and information for students including graduate student well-being, inclusive health resources, sexual health resources, sleep resources, and more. Explore the website here.

Medallion Program: Student mindfulness facilitation workshop

Are you passionate or curious about the practice of mindfulness? Want to support the mental well-being of your peers, develop leadership skills, and tap into your creativity? In this workshop, students will learn the history of mindfulness, the neuroscience of mindfulness and meditation, various mindfulness meditation practices, trauma-sensitive approaches, inclusive language, and best practices for facilitating mindfulness. As a result of this program, students will receive credit towards the Medallion Program and then can choose to become student mindfulness facilitators with the Mindful University Project. Registration is required.
