Can a planet have a mind of its own?

Illustration showing four stages to describe Earth's past and possible future

In a self-described “thought experiment,” Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and colleagues David Grinspoon at the Planetary Science Institute and Sara Walker at Arizona State University use scientific theory and broader questions about how life alters a planet, to posit four stages to describe Earth’s past and possible future.

In today’s issue:

  • University IT offers a reminder on upcoming enhanced security features for Microsoft 365 apps
  • Attend the Migration Film Festival next week, part of the yearlong Sawyer Seminar series on migration
  • The deadline for 2022 Satcher Community Health Improvement Award nominations has been extended to March 1
TODAY’S UPDATES

Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are three new positive cases among students to report: one on the Medical Campus, and two on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

A reminder on face masks: they must be worn properly, covering the nose and mouth, indoors on the University’s campuses and properties. Visit the face mask FAQ page for full information on what kinds of masks are acceptable.

Ukraine situation ‘feels like back to the future’

In a recent Q-and-A, Randall Stone, chair of the Department of Political Science and director of the University’s Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, explains why a Russian invasion of Ukraine would be a “terrible miscalculation.”

Upcoming enhanced security features for Microsoft 365 apps

Beginning March 1, you will be required to use Duo two-factor authentication to access Microsoft 365 applications such as Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online when not connected to the University Network. This change will enhance the security of accounts, applications, and services.

Review the items below to ensure this change does not affect your ability to work remotely.

Once this change takes place, you will receive a Duo prompt once every 30 days if you access Microsoft applications remotely. Contact your support team or the University IT Help Desk via email or at (585) 275-2000 with questions.
