TODAY’S UPDATES

Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are three new positive cases among students to report: one on the Medical Campus, one on the Eastman Campus, and one on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

Public Safety and Title IX Office warn of social media scam

Since the fall, four University students have reported situations of attempted or completed blackmail through a targeted social media scam. The culprits have been targeting males, pretending to seek an intimate online relationship with them through social media sites, and instead utilizing screen recording capabilities to capture intimate images or videos without the students’ knowledge or consent. The scammers then send frequent communication attempting to blackmail the individual for considerable sums of money.

The Department of Public Safety asks that all University community members review the department’s guidance on scams and fraud for context on common scam strategies and ways to avoid becoming a victim of such schemes.

Support the Rochester community with a United Way gift

“You continue to lead, serve, and show up in profound ways for our community,” says Jaime Saunders, president and CEO of the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Fingers Lakes, in a new video message to the University community. If you haven’t given yet, consider making a pledge today. You’ll be eligible for this week’s prize drawings and the two weeks to follow if you make a pledge by Friday, March 18, at 4 p.m. EDT. Thanks to all continuous pledge payroll donors, whose pledges have now rolled over to the 2022 campaign. If you still wish to modify your continuous pledge, you can email the University’s United Way Office.

Enhanced security features for Microsoft 365 apps

As a reminder, on March 1 University IT started requiring Duo two-factor authentication to access Microsoft 365 applications such as Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint Online when not connected to the University Network. The rollout of this change will continue through March 22. Anyone requiring changes to email configuration on their devices has already been contacted directly with additional instructions.

If you have been prompted for a Duo login while accessing mail on your mobile device, your account has already been enabled, and no further action is required. More information can be found here.

Once this change occurs, you will receive a Duo prompt once every 30 days if you access Microsoft applications remotely. If you have any questions, contact your support team or the University IT Help Desk via email or by calling (585)275-2000.
