SECURITY TIP

Don’t be haunted by a ‘ghost tax preparer’

Still looking for someone to file your return? The IRS warns taxpayers to choose a preparer wisely and avoid those who refuse to sign tax returns. Also known as “ghost preparers,” these scammers are looking to make a quick profit and promise big returns. They do this by faking your income and deductions to boost the size of your refund, but those refunds are directed straight to their account instead of yours. The IRS offers guidance on a few red flags to look out for, how to ensure you’re using a verified professional, and how to report preparer misconduct.
