What is intimate partner violence? It’s not just physical abuse

Intimate partner violence, a type of domestic violence, affects millions of Americans each year and can take the form of physical, sexual, emotional, and even economic abuse. Catherine Cerulli, director of both the University’s Susan B. Anthony Center and the Laboratory of Interpersonal Violence and Victimization, talks about how to spot an unhealthy relationship before domestic violence starts.

SECURITY TIP

Don’t be fooled by last-minute tax scams

University IT notes that even if you’ve already filed your taxes, it’s important to remain vigilant as we approach the end of tax season. Cybercriminals posing as the IRS or tax preparers will go to great lengths to steal your information and reroute your refund destination. Avoid any suspicious emails with attachments, links, calls, or texts requesting social security numbers, banking accounts, or any other forms of personal identification. As always, changing your password is a great way to protect your identity. Those who receive suspicious emails should forward them to phishing@irs.gov.

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Reminder: Change to how University’s banking information is used

Due to an increase in fraudulent activity, the Office of Treasury Management is now the only office permitted to issue banking information—including, but not limited to, University bank account numbers and bank transactions—to vendors, suppliers, and external and internal customers. Please remove any of the University’s wiring instructions from forms, departmental websites, etc., and destroy copies of any existing banking instructions currently in use. If it is necessary for your department to receive funds electronically, contact Treasury Management directly at treasury@ur.rochester.edu for assistance. This change will help safeguard the University’s financial assets and strengthen controls to deter fraud.
