TODAY’S UPDATES

Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are 48 new positive cases among students to report: one on the Eastman Campus, four on the Medical Campus, and 43 on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

University to introduce new banded parking program

All current University parking permits will expire on June 30. As part of ongoing efforts to support employees, Transportation and Parking is implementing a new rate structure for the upcoming parking year based on an employee’s salary band. 22 days until Class of 2022 Commencement

Registration is open for eligible members of the Class of 2022 to participate in University Commencement weekend events and secure guest tickets for the University-wide ceremony on May 13. Don’t forget to check out the graduate checklist, and the celebration toolkit to get ready for the big day.

Find opportunities with Event and Classroom Management

Learn more about hiring opportunities for undergraduate students with Event and Classroom Management on Thursday, April 21, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. at their table in Hirst Lounge, Wilson Commons. Open positions for Commencement 2022 and Fall 2022. For more information, email ecm@rochester.edu.

Family Pillar Award, ‘Dear Family’ deadlines for graduating seniors

If you are a graduating senior supported by the Office of Minority Student Affairs, you’re invited to nominate a parent, family member, or loved one for the Family Pillar Award. Find more information, access the nomination form, and submit your essay here. Nominations are due Sunday, April 24.

All graduating seniors can share a “Dear Family” message of gratitude, appreciation, humor, or thanks in honor of their parents or family members for their support. Messages should be 60 words or less and a picture can be included. The deadline to submit is Friday, April 29. Submissions will be highlighted in the parent and family newsletter, Parents Buzz, and on the Parent and Family Relations web page and Facebook page.

Tutor study hours with the Language Center

To support students enrolled in language classes, the Language Center is holding the following tutor study hours on Sunday, April 24, in the computer hub in Douglass Commons, Room 304:

  • Noon to 2 p.m. for Arabic, Ancient Greek and Latin, Chinese, and Polish
  • 2 to 4 p.m. for French, German, Italian, and Korean
  • 4 to 6 p.m. for Hebrew, Japanese, and Russian
  • 6 to 8 p.m. for ASL, Portuguese, and Spanish

Deadline extended for summer internship funding

Students now have until April 24 to apply for monetary support for their summer experiences. This funding is for undergraduates who obtain a summer internship to investigate career options, develop skills, and link classroom learning to the world of work. 2023–24 Fulbright US Scholar Program

The Fulbright US Scholar Program offers teaching and research awards to US citizens in more than 130 countries. College and university faculty and administrators, as well as professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, and many others, can join the more than 400,000 Fulbrighters who have come away with enhanced skills, new connections, and greater mutual understanding.

Interested faculty and professionals are encouraged to learn more about these opportunities by visiting the Catalog of Awards, connecting with Fulbright, or attending a webinar. You may also refer a colleague who could contribute to and gain from the Fulbright Program.

The application deadline is September 15. Applicants must be US citizens.

Voices of XR: Sylvia Xueni Pan

Sylvia Xueni Pan, a senior lecturer in virtual reality (VR) at Goldsmiths, University of London, focuses her research on the use of VR as a medium for real-time social interaction, particularly for training and therapy. Join Pan on Friday, April 22, from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT for her talk “Virtual Humans in VR” over Zoom and in-person in Studio X. Register to attend.

‘In Conversation with AI: the Power, Pitfalls,  and Potential of Large Language Models’

Join the Department of Philosophy and the Central New York Humanities Corridor on Friday, April 22, for “In Conversation with AI: the Power, Pitfalls, and Potential of Large Language Models” with Iason Gabriel, a senior research scientist at DeepMind. This free, in-person talk will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Goergen Hall, Room 101. 

Attend an intensive bystander training class

Join the TRANSFORM Research Center for a free three-hour intensive bystander training exclusive to the Rochester community. “Support Over Silence for KIDS” is a call to action that gives community members the skills to confidently defuse challenging moments between a caregiver and their child in public. Free Starbucks coupons from the UHS Health Promotion Office

On Tuesday, April 26, in Hirst Lounge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the UHS Health Promotion Office is giving away coupons for a free drink at Starbucks, while supplies last. Join an online sleep challenge

According to research, sleep affects all three learning processes, including acquisition, recall, and memory consolidation. To learn how you can improve your sleep hygiene and quality, sign up for the Health Promotion Office’s 21-day online “Zzzs to As” sleep challenge. It includes information on the science and physiology of sleep, sleep challenges common to college students, sleep and diet, relaxation and mindfulness training, and more.
