Celebrate this year’s Art of Science Competition winners

The judges have weighed in and your ballots have been counted. Meet the winners of this year’s Art of Science Competition and celebrate their entries at a reception starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, on the second floor of Carlson Library.

Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are 17 new positive cases among students to report: one on the Eastman Campus, five on the Medical Campus, and 11 on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

Taking a page from poetry to understand the music

In his new book, Lines and Lyrics: An Introduction to Poetry and Song, Matt BaileyShea, an associate professor of music theory, explores the interrelationship between poetry, lyrics, and music.

Flags will be lowered for Edward Opich

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, May 3, for Edward Opich, a senior communication analyst in Information Technology Services, University Telecommunications Division, who died on January 16. Opich joined the University staff in 1995.

Answering fun questions on social media puts your identity in jeopardy

Have you ever scrolled through social media and come across a post telling you to share your celebrity name by combining your birth date with your astrological sign? Or nostalgic questions like “The car you passed your driving test in was a (fill in the blank).” What looks to be a fun, enticing post can be used against you. Did you know scammers use your results and answers to circumvent password security questions? Be mindful of the interactive posts you take part in, comment on, or share with the public. Find writing help at Night to Write

At Night to Write, AS&E students will find snacks, coffee, and company to help fuel productivity and fight end-of-semester procrastination. Writing tutors and librarians will be available to help and answer questions. Drop in and write as long as you would like today, April 25, from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library.

Fitness classes at Goergen Athletic Center

Sign up for fitness classes offered at the Goergen Athletic Center during finals season:

  • Peer-led vinyasa yoga on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Zumba on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Iyengar yoga via Zoom on Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. EDT
  • Iyengar yoga on Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m.

Classes are open to all undergraduate students and Goergen Athletic Center members. Registration is required.

Warner Wednesday talk on education in Estonia

Attend the next Warner Wednesday talk, “Education in Estonia: Perspectives from Tallinn University,” presented by Tallinn University’s Merilyn Meristo, an associate professor of French, and Eve Eisenschmidt, a professor of educational leadership, who will speak about foreign language teaching and learning in Estonia, from grades 1 to 12 and at the university level. The HyFlex event takes place Wednesday, April 27, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. Registration is required. For disability-related accommodations, email Mary Judge Diegert.

Virtual talk: US Latinos with cancer experience health disparities

Tune in to the Center for Community Health & Prevention’s Facebook page on Thursday, April 28, any time after 11 a.m. EDT as Evelyn Arana, a research assistant professor, presents “Cancer Health Disparities among US Latinos.” The taped presentation will address health disparities faced by Latinos with cancer, from diagnosis to treatment, why the disparities exist, and what can be done about them. The talk is a special event for National Minority Health Month in April. 

Attend the Hajim School’s annual Design Day

The Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ annual Design Day celebration will be held in person this year from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Friday, April 29, under a tent on the Hajim Quad, River Campus. Nearly 100 capstone projects will be on display, and this year’s Dottie Welch Award recipient will be announced.

Mechanical engineering, optics, and computer and data science teams will exhibit their projects from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Audio and music engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and electrical and computer engineering senior design teams, as well as teams of CMTI master’s degree students in medical device design, will show their projects from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
