Gateways Music Festival Orchestra makes Carnegie Hall debut
The Gateways Music Festival Orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut on Sunday, April 24, with conductor Anthony Parnther (far right) and Grammy Award-winning pianist Jon Batiste (waving). The performance wrapped up the weeklong Gateways Music Festival in association with the Eastman School of Music. The group is the first all-Black classical symphony orchestra presented by Carnegie Hall in its history.

The University welcomes 114 seniors and 16 juniors as 2022 inductees into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. They’ll join 18 current seniors who were elected as juniors last spring. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest academic honor society.
Clinical and Translational Science Institute looks back over two years, two pandemics
Did you know that the Clinical and Translational Science Institute was one of the first dozen institutions in the nation funded by the NIH’s Clinical and Translational Science Awards Program? Sixteen years later, the institute is still a leader in its field. It can be hard for caregivers to know when a boy has an eating disorder, says Nicole Cifra, a third-year adolescent medicine fellow in the Department of Pediatrics. She has changed the way she addresses it with her male patients, making sure to tell them right away that “I take care of boys, too, and you’re not alone. You are not the only one going through this, [but it’s] talked about less among males than females.”

A new fitness and wellness platform is coming soon
Through the Total Rewards Program, the University offers award-winning health and wellness benefits to engage employees in healthy habits. On May 1, Well-UÂ is launching Studio Sweat On-Demand, a streaming platform with over 1,700 fitness classes and well-being content. Classes are available both live and on-demand so you can work out anywhere and at any time.

The Study Coordinators Organization for Research and Education, a Clinical and Translational Science Institute educational program, provides support to University research coordinators and staff. Register now for the SCORE annual seminar, “Caring for Yourself to Care for Others,” taking place June 7 and 8. Patricia Lück, an assistant professor of clinical medical humanities, will offer the keynote speech “Thriving Through Overwhelm: A Mindfulness Approach.”
A ‘musical extravaganza’ for the last day of classes
To celebrate the last day of classes for the academic year, the Arthur Satz Department of Music presents a “musical extravaganza” today, April 27, in front of Rush Rhees Library at 5 p.m. In the event of rain, the location will be changed to Upper Strong Auditorium. All are welcome to listen to a program that includes the Ukrainian National Anthem and the theme from Star Wars. The performance is directed by Rachel Waddell, director of orchestra activities, who will be joined by members of the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Brass Choir. The concert will also be streamed live on the University’s Facebook page.
MS medical management program information sessions
John Haddick is a distinguished engineer with the Lenovo Intelligent Devices Group and the chief technology officer for Lenovo’s ThinkReality portfolio. On Friday, April 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT, Haddick will discuss Lenovo’s investment and development of commercial AR/VR solutions in his talk, “Think Reality: Helping Build the Enterprise Metaverse.” The event will take place over Zoom and in-person in Studio X. Relax with some therapy dogs at the Health Promotion Office’s final PAWS for Stress Relief events of the semester on Thursday, April 28, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the Eastman Student Living Center and Monday, May 2, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in Goergen Athletic Center.
