Undergraduate research highlighted at annual expo

Student research involving a protein-coding gene, life in an upstate New York prison town, a device to diagnose sepsis from sweat, and the impact of exclusionary zoning in Monroe County were the top award winners at the University’s annual Undergraduate Research Exposition. More than 100 students presented their projects at a speakers symposium and a poster session during the day-long event.

Susan B. Anthony Legacy Awards recipients announced

The 2022 Susan B. Anthony Legacy Awards, honoring exceptional women from the University community and their achievements, have been announced. The Susan B. Anthony Center presents the awards annually to professional women leaders and undergraduate women.

Flags will be lowered for Doreen Farron

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Thursday, May 5, for Doreen Farron, a patient unit secretary in the neuromedicine intensive care unit nursing at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on March 14. Farron joined the University staff in 2012.

Disney, Florida and how corporations navigate competing political interests

The University has several academic opportunities for those who wish to pursue a sustainability-related field of study. Undergraduates can take advantage of Rochester’s open curriculum to incorporate sustainability courses into their studies either as a major, minor, cluster, or electives. BBQuad marks end of semester for undergraduates

Celebrate the end of the academic year with the annual BBQuad today, April 28, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Undergraduates from the College and Eastman School of Music can enjoy a free barbecue-themed lunch on Wilson Quad. Dietary options are available including vegetarian and made without gluten. Conquering the mobile rock wall, rock out to music, and refuel for finals at the event. Sponsored by class councils, Wilson Commons Student Activities, Student Programming Board, and Dining Services.

Transparent assignment design workshop

Instructors can learn the principles of transparency in assignment design during an upcoming Zoom workshop. Clarifying assignments using TILT methods has been shown to reduce achievement gaps for first-generation students.  Register here to attend on Friday, April 29, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. The workshop is part of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning’s Spring 2022 Teaching Workshop Series.

Designate a beneficiary for your HSA account

Did you know only 35 percent of University employees have designated a beneficiary for their HSA account?  Periodically reviewing your beneficiary designations for your HSA is important so that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.  Designate or update your beneficiaries by logging into your HSA Bank account or filling out the HSA Designation of Beneficiary form.

Celebration of Authorship reception

Join University President Sarah Mangelsdorf and Interim Provost Sarah Peyre today, April 28, for the Celebration of Authorship reception, honoring University faculty and staff from all fields who have authored major scholarly achievements. The reception takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. Authors will be on hand to sign copies of their works and discuss their inspiration, and copies of many of the works will be available for purchase.

Friends of Strong vehicle donation program to benefit patient care

If you’re thinking of selling or trading in an old car, truck, boat, RV, or snowmobile, consider donating your old ride to Friends of Strong instead. Contact their vehicle donation partner, Vehicles for Charity, by calling (866) 628-2277 or fill out the online donation form and designate Friends of Strong Memorial Hospital as your selected charity. Vehicles for Charity will schedule a free pick-up, sell the vehicle at auction, and send you a receipt. Learn more here.

Participate in an mRNA HIV vaccine research study

Volunteers between the ages of 18 and 55 are needed for an mRNA vaccine research study to combat HIV. The vaccines in this study are made using the mRNA technology that has been successful in fighting COVID-19. It is impossible to get HIV from study vaccines, and volunteers are compensated up to $750 for participation.
