Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are 19 positive cases among students to report: two on the Eastman Campus, seven on the Medical Campus, and 10 on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

Student Employees of the Year announced

Benjamin Lapidus ’22 and Simon Business School graduate student Anush Mehrabyan ’21, are the University’s Student Employees of the Year. The award is sponsored by the Student Employment Office. Lapidus is an economics major from Deer Park, New York, who works for Wilson Commons Student Activities. Mehrabyan is an Armenia native in the accountancy program at Simon. She works at the Barbara J. Burger iZone.

Three Minute Thesis competition winner focuses on pancreatic cancer

Tara Vrooman, a PhD candidate in the lab of Scott Gerber, an associate professor of surgery and radiation oncology, won the top prize at this year’s Three Minute Thesis competition with her description of a novel treatment being developed by the lab to combat pancreatic cancer without removing the tumor. Jodyi Wren, interim executive director of the Gwen M. Greene Center for Career Education and Connections, offers advice for soon-to-be and newly minted graduates aiming to get a job.

Student organization Welcome Week proposals due today

Fall 2022 Welcome Week program proposals and interest forms for AS&E undergraduate student organizations are due today by 11:59 p.m. EDT. Welcome Week opportunities include hosting a program or activity for new students or performing at select Welcome Week events. Review opportunity details and complete a proposal or interest form on behalf of your organization. Email orientation@rochester.edu with questions.

Day of Mindfulness

Take a study break and drop by the Day of Mindfulness event hosted in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library, on Sunday, May 1, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Attend a yoga class, take part in peer-led pop-up meditations, pet therapy dogs, and more. The evening’s schedule is as follows:

  • 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.: Peer-led yoga. Spots are limited. Register here.
  • 6:30 to 8 p.m.: Therapy dogs from RocDog
  • 6:45 to 7 p.m.: Video screening on how students incorporate mindfulness throughout their day
  • 7 p.m.: Pop-up meditation
  • 7:45 p.m.: Pop-up meditation

Peer-led yoga

Take a break from your studies to engage in some movement with the Mindful University Project’s peer-led yoga classes. Join certified yoga teacher Jenny Lee for a 60-minute yoga session that is open to all practice levels. As an intentional space for stillness, you will leave class with strategies to help you navigate daily stressors as you move through finals weeks. Register here for classes, which take place from Monday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m in Goergen Athletic Center.

Survey on use of plastic bottles on campus

Dining Team Green has released a survey designed to gauge student opinion on the possibility of banning the sale of single-use plastic bottles on campus and replacing all plastic bottles with more sustainable alternatives. A decision on whether this policy will be pursued has not been reached, and they are interested in student input before recommending any further steps. Students can take the survey here.

Center for Research on Flavored Tobacco pilot proposals

The Center for Research on Flavored Tobacco (CRoFT) at the University and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is accepting applications for year-five pilot projects for research to inform FDA regulation of tobacco products. Read the RFA for eligibility and application guidelines. The deadline to apply is May 2 at 11:59 p.m. for projects beginning September 1.

Annual Saward-Berg Lecture

Join the Department of Public Health Sciences for the annual Saward-Berg Lecture on Friday, May 6, at 12:30 p.m. in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425), Medical Center. Hao Yu, an associate professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School, will present the lecture “The ACA Medicaid Expansion and the Distribution and Compensation of New Primary Care Physicians.” Refreshments will be served after the event.

The latest issue of Encompass, a monthly newsletter from the Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion, includes a message from Mercedes Ramírez Fernández, the Richard Feldman Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and chief diversity officer, as well as highlights from the University’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Leadership Summit. Participate in a wisdom tooth research study

Participants are needed for a research study that compares pain relief medications after wisdom teeth extraction. You may be eligible to participate if you are 18 years of age or older and you have at least one wisdom tooth impacted in the lower jaw. You will be asked to attend 2–3 visits (screening/surgery and follow-up visit), take study medication if needed, complete a morning and evening eDiary questionnaire on your smartphone, wear a watch-like device, and return unused medication and study supplies at your follow-up visit.
