Students, faculty, and staff found creative ways to turn bacterial cells, the refraction of light, salivary glands, and oil spills into winning entries this year in the annual Art of Science Competition. Renowned soprano Julia Bullock in residence at Eastman School of Music
World-renowned soprano Julia Bullock ’09E will be in residence at the Eastman School of Music this week.
On Friday, May 6, Bullock will discuss how restorative justice can be realized in the performing arts and learning environments. She will also teach a public working session with voice students and their collaborative pianists in Hatch Recital Hall. On Saturday, May 7, Bullock will adjudicate the final round of the 2022 Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition at 1 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall. Find details on Bullock’s visit.
New research finds the risk of psychotic-like experiences can start in childhood
It has long been understood that environmental and socio-economic factors—including income disparity, family poverty, and air pollution—increase a person’s risk of developing psychotic-like experiences that can become precursors to a schizophrenia diagnosis later in life. Research has long focused on young adults but now, thanks to data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, Rochester researchers have found these risk factors can be observed in pre-adolescent children.

Faculty Survey of Teaching with Technology
All University faculty and instructors are invited to participate in the Faculty Survey of Teaching with Technology. The survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete, is being conducted by the Educational IT Governance Committee to collect feedback about your individual experiences. Other questions address your usage of available tools and the impact of the pandemic on your teaching practices. The survey also provides a mechanism to share thoughts about the limitations of using technology for teaching and to offer ideas for improvement.

Registration deadline approaching for Summer@Eastman
The final registration deadline to submit your application for Summer@Eastman programs is May 15. Offerings include 19 in-person institutes, 15 online workshops, 10 graduate courses (including two online ones and a study abroad program), two multi-week residential programs for high school students, as well as full-day and half-day music camps for commuting students. Note: some institutes and programs require a video audition (cello, flute, french horn, trombone, Summer Classical Studies, and Summer Jazz Studies).
