Global Celebration Committee seeks input from University community on plan to showcase diversity

Established earlier this semester and comprised of faculty, staff, and students across the University, the Global Celebration Committee is overseeing an initiative to showcase the institution’s global diversity.

The University community is asked to submit creative ideas that would represent Rochester’s global diversity in meaningful, valuable, and inspirational ways. The committee, cochaired by Nile Blunt, the McPherson Director for Academic Programs at the Memorial Art Gallery, and William FitzPatrick, the Gideon Webster Burbank Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy, will accept submissions through mid-October and make recommendations to University President Sarah Mangelsdorf in December.

More than 90 projects were on display at this year’s Senior Design Day, hosted by the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences for teams of graduating students in engineering, computer science, and data science—as well as in the medical device design master’s program. Above, Thang C Le (right) demonstrates his team’s autonomously controlled robot, which combines several sensors and modules to safely navigate buildings on campus as it delivers packages.

Flags will be lowered for Thomas Ferbel

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, May 10, for Thomas Ferbel, a professor of physics at Rochester from 1965 to 2008, who died on March 13.

Student life spaces on the River Campus have modified hours and services for the end of the semester and the approaching summer. View the schedules for finals, senior week, commencement, and summer online for spaces including Wilson Commons, Douglass Commons, and Genesee and Spurrier Halls.

Memorial Art Gallery college internship survey

Take part in a survey to help the Memorial Art Gallery shape its college internship program to best suit the needs of area college students who may be interested in working in museums, nonprofits, or cultural organizations. In appreciation of your time, you may opt to be included in a lottery for a $30 GrubHub gift certificate.

Webinar on raised-bed gardening

Are you interested in learning how to garden? Join UR Medicine EAP and Cornell Cooperative Extension on Tuesday, May 10, at noon EDT to learn key steps to a successful vegetable garden. Symposium on ‘polluted media’

“Downstream: Navigating Polluted Media Currents,” a humanities symposium to focus on, and facilitate conversation about, media pollution, kicks off on Thursday, May 5, with a keynote lecture from Whitney Phillips, coauthor of You Are Here, at 6 p.m. On Friday, May 6, take part in panel discussions and a Twitter analytics workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both events take place in the Humanities Center, Conference Room D, Rush Rhees Library.

Open house for new School of Nursing spaces

Friday, May 6, is the ribbon-cutting for the new three-story, 26,000-square-foot addition to Helen Wood Hall at the School of Nursing. It runs from noon to 2 p.m. and is by invitation only.

Following the ribbon-cutting, the School of Nursing is hosting an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. to show off the new spaces and demo some of the emerging simulation and extended reality technology. All are welcome to come and tour the site. Light refreshments will be available.

Free skin cancer screening

Together with Rochester Regional Health’s Division of Dermatology, the Rochester Dermatologic Society, and the American Academy of Dermatology, the Department of Dermatology is providing free skin cancer screenings from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 7, on the first floor of the dermatology suite in College Town, 40 Celebration Drive. Screenings are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and no appointment is needed.
