The secret to a longer lifespan? Gene regulation holds a clue

What accounts for a longer lifespan? According to new research from Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor in the Department of Biology; Andrei Seluanov, a professor of biology and medicine; and Jinlong Lu, a postdoctoral research associate in Gorbunova’s lab, a key piece of the puzzle lies in the mechanisms that regulate gene expression.

Major grant funds research to understand key features of OCD

A team of scientists from across the country will use an award from the National Institute of Mental Health to investigate the brain networks central to obsessive-compulsive disorder. The work will build on more than 15 years of research by lead investigator Suzanne Haber, Dean’s Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology and a professor of neuroscience and of psychiatry, and collaborators to understand the underlying biology of the disease and guide the development of effective treatments.

With nursing home staff lagging on booster shot uptake, experts fear new outbreaks among seniors

“Low booster rates among direct care staff will place vulnerable nursing residents at increased risk of COVID infection and, unfortunately, a number of these infections will result in adverse outcomes, including death,” says Brian McGarry, an assistant professor of medicine and of public health sciences. “While vaccines dramatically lower absolute risk, vaccinated nursing home residents are at the much higher relative risk of hospitalization or death if infected compared to the general population.”

Program of dance, music, and film brings Native American stories to campus

Registration open for 10th Annual Wilmot Warrior Walk

The 10th annual Wilmot Warrior Walk is slated for Sunday, September 11, at Genesee Valley Park. Those who prefer may participate virtually anytime, anywhere September 9–11. All proceeds from the event benefit cancer research and the Judy DiMarzo Cancer Survivorship Program at Wilmot Cancer Institute. Learn more or form your team.

Workshop on technology and mental health

Join the Gandhi Institute for the experiential workshop series “Big Tech, Mental Health, and Social Change” to explore a variety of aspects of smartphone and app-based technology.
