Is this the summer you’re going to read Ulysses by James Joyce?

In the century since its publication, James Joyce’s Ulysses has been described as beautiful, overrated, experimental, pornographic, dull, and genius. Based on insights from James Longenbach, the Joseph Henry Gilmore Professor of English, and his years of reading, teaching, and writing about Ulysses, here are a few things you might not know about the 700-plus-page novel that regularly ranks among the greatest—and most challenging—English-language works of fiction.

FOR STUDENTS

10th annual bioethics lecture

The NIH requires that all graduate students and postdoctoral appointees receive continued instruction on the responsible conduct of research (RCR) throughout their training. As part of ongoing efforts to satisfy this requirement, the University sponsors periodic RCR lectures and workshops, including an annual lecture on biomedical and health science research ethics.

In addition to completing the Ethics and Professional Integrity in Research Course (IND501/506), all graduate students and postdoctoral appointees are required to attend the annual research ethics lecture, “From Chasing My Cure to Chasing Our Cures: Lessons Learned as a Physician, Patient, and Researcher,” on Tuesday, June 14, from 3 to 4 p.m. via Zoom. Presented by David Fajgenbaum, an assistant professor of medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, the event will also include a post-lecture Q&A session. Register here to attend.

AAPI trainee support group meeting

The AAPI trainee support committee will host a support group meeting on Zoom on Thursday, June 16, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT to create a safe space for AAPI graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to check in, share experiences, and support one another. People are welcome to drop in or out at any time. Register in advance to attend; a confirmation email will contain information about joining the meeting.
