‘Supergene’ wreaks havoc in a genome

The human genome is littered with “selfish genetic elements,” which do not seem to benefit their hosts but instead seek only to propagate themselves. Rochester researchers including Amanda Larracuente, an associate professor of biology, and Daven Presgraves, Dean’s Professor of Biology, have for the first time used population genomics to shed light on the evolution and consequences of Segregation Distorter (SD), a selfish genetic element that skews the rules of fair genetic transmission.

English as a human rights issue: Warner program meets refugees where they are in the community

The Warner School of Education’s international Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program, directed by Hairong Shang-Butler, an associate clinical professor of teaching and curriculum, and with support from former and current Warner School students, meets Afghan refugees and immigrants where they are in the Rochester community to teach them English. Graduate student and postdocs writing boot camp

A virtual writing boot camp for AS&E graduate students and postdocs is taking place from July 19 to 22, from 9 a.m. to noon EDT each day. Boot camps offer a structured experience for writers to identify their writing goals, develop and refine these goals in conversations with peers, and receive support for selecting effective strategies. Webinars today on using tuition benefits for a Simon degree

University employees interested in a Simon Business School degree can get all of their questions answered on using tuition benefits during virtual sessions today, July 12, at noon or 6 p.m. EDT. Attendees of the live sessions will receive an application fee waiver, a $150 value. For those unable to attend, a recording will be emailed to the address used at registration. Schedule a ‘sweat party’ for your department

What’s a sweat party? It’s a way to get your team or department to participate in an on-demand virtual class  together. Take 10 minutes to stretch or use a department meeting for a yoga class—you choose what works best for your group. First, create an account or sign in to Studio Sweat. Follow these instructions and email Well-U with questions.

Register for the Department of Psychiatry's annual Brown Bag series

As part of the 10th annual Summer Brown Bag series, the Department of Psychiatry—in collaboration with Golisano Children’s Hospital, the School of Nursing, Wilmot Cancer Institute, and the Departments of Medicine, Neurology, and Pediatrics—will present discussions and presentations focused on the use of the biopsychosocial model to promote equitable care at the Medical Center. Webinars will take place Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 p.m., from July 13 to August 24. Find registration details and information about the series.

Community dinners with the Gandhi Institute

Join the M.K. Gandhi Institute for community dinners throughout the summer in the Gandhi house and garden. Connect, talk, mourn, celebrate, exchange stories, create ideas, dream, and get to know each other over a shared meal. You can donate if you would like to or bring a dish to pass. The next dinner is Wednesday, July 13, at 6 p.m. Email bianca@gandhiinstitute.org to join.

Rochester Victory Alliance walking in Pride Parade

Rochester Victory Alliance invites the University community to walk in this year’s Rochester Pride Parade, Saturday, July 16. People in the group will get free admission to the ROC Pride Fest at Cobbs Hill Park, a free Rochester Victory Alliance T-shirt, and some swag. The parade begins at 1 p.m.; the group will meet at 12:30 p.m. Register to join here.

The Horizons at Warner students are back in LeChase Hall. The K-8 students take part in six weeks of learning experiences on River Campus and take weekly field trips to sites around the Greater Rochester area. Find more photos on the Warner School Instagram.
