In an underground mine in South Dakota, researchers unravel mysteries of dark matter

components used to assemble the dark matter-search experiment LZ—including digital electronics developed at Rochester—are transported down a shaft and installed in the nearly mile-deep research cavern at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota.

Students and researchers from Rochester are part of a team of about 250 scientists from 35 institutions that has deployed the world’s most sensitive dark matter detector, which may profoundly expand our understanding of the universe. Frank Wolfs, a professor of physics and astronomy, is overseeing Rochester’s efforts in the project. New all-gender restrooms on River Campus​

In celebration of Rochester Pride Week, the University announces that seven multi-stall gendered restrooms on the River Campus will be transitioned to all-gender restrooms in late July. This is a student-led advancement for the transgender and non-binary communities that aligns with the priority of intrinsic inclusivity within Arts, Sciences & Engineering. Read these FAQs to learn more about the project. The restrooms that will be affected are:

  • Bausch & Lomb Hall, third floor (396W), currently a men’s room
  • Dewey Hall, first floor (1141 and 1143), currently men’s and women’s rooms
  • Lattimore Hall, fifth floor (535A), currently a women’s room
  • Meliora Hall, third floor (365/365A and 364/364A), currently men’s and women’s rooms
  • Wilmot Building, first floor (111), currently a men’s room

Concerned about breast and ovarian cancers? Research brings progress.

Two new innovations could make it easier for doctors to decipher when cancers that affect women are present and need urgent attention.

Anyone affected by cancer is invited to join Wilmot Cancer Institute for “Survivors Night” with the Rochester Red Wings on Friday, July 29. Tickets cost $4 each and cancer survivors and their families are invited to participate in a parade on the field before the game. Tickets will also be sold from 10 a.m. to noon at the Wilmot Cancer Center lobby on Friday, July 15, or at Wilmot Cancer Institute Greece on Tuesday, July 19.

New MAG exhibit showcases South African bead art

“Ubuhle Women: Beadwork and the Art of Independence,” a new exhibition at Memorial Art Gallery, showcases a new form of bead art, the ndwango (“cloth”), developed by a community of women living and working together in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Learn more about the exhibit, which runs July 17–October 23.

Wilmot Cancer Institute opened its 14th cancer center on July 11 at 875 Hard Road in Webster. The new building will provide multidisciplinary cancer care for patients, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, clinical trials, and other services.
