Rochester police officer remembered as gun violence epidemic takes enormous toll

The University and Medical Center communities are shocked and saddened by the killing of Rochester Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, who died on July 21. Mark Gestring, chief of the division of acute care surgery, led the team that performed an emergency operation on Officer Mazurkiewicz. “As the region’s only level one trauma center, our teams have to be ready for everything, all the time,” Gestring said. “Still, it’s important to acknowledge the enormous toll events like this take on all of us.” Gestring noted that the killing of Officer Mazurkiewicz was a highly visible example of the gun-violence epidemic in Rochester.

Strong Memorial Hospital is being lit in blue through Monday, August 1, in honor of Officer Mazurkiewicz, and University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong’s Emergency Department will be lowered on August 1.
