Wormholes and stains add to backstory of medieval manuscript’s acquisition

Franklin W. & Gladys I. Clark Professor Emeritus of History Richard W. Kaeuper examines for the first time a c. 1330-1340 copy of Pierre and Guillaume de Maucreux’s “Ordonnances de plaidoyer de bouche et par escript” (Ordonances governing legal pleas made orally and in writing), a treatise on how to argue legal cases at the Parlement de Paris, in The University of Rochester’s Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation (RBSCP) department in Rush Rhees Library July 11, 2022. An important early source for the study of the French Parlement and the development of French legal practice, it was likely copied in Paris, and is written on parchment. RBSCP acquired the Medieval manuscript to become part of a new fund—the Kaeuper Medieval Manuscripts Fund—that honors Richard (Dick) Kaeuper, a well-known medieval historian, on the occasion of his retirement. The money was raised largely among Dick's former students.

A 700-year-old manuscript is the first in a new library collection that honors historian Richard Kaeuper, the Franklin W. and Gladys I. Clark Professor Emeritus of History. Nearly 100 alumni helped make the newly minted Richard W. Kaeuper Collection of Medieval Manuscripts a reality. Read about the collection and the manuscript’s acquisition.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

450 million years ago, Earth's magnetic field almost collapsed—the results would have been apocalyptic

Inverse, August 6

John Tarduno, the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Geophysics in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and dean of research for Arts, Sciences & Engineering, said that our planet would have lost a lot of its water if the magnetic field had not come back. “The planet would be much drier and very different than the planet today,” he pointed out. “This research really highlights the need to have something like a growing inner core that sustains a magnetic field over the entire lifetime—many billions of years—of a planet.”
