Construction begins on new Laser Lab expansion

A rendering of the The 66,000-square-foot addition to the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester is expected to be complete in 2024.

The University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics has broken ground on a $42 million, 66,000-square-foot office and lab building expansion. Expected to be completed in 2024, the expansion—shown above in a rendering—directly connects to the facility’s existing building on East River Road in Brighton.

TODAY’S UPDATES

Research program will unlock workings of glymphatic system

A new grant from the National Institutes of Health will bring together several teams of researchers to accelerate understanding of the complex mechanics that control the glymphatic system, with an eye toward the development of new therapies for diseases like Alzheimer’s. Maiken Nedergaard, a professor of neurology and neurosurgery and codirector of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, will lead the research program.


FOR STUDENTS

Biomedical data science hackathon

The University’s 2022 Biomedical Data Science Hackathon will take place online August 22–26. The hackathon is open to all University undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs, and includes prizes for better than random predictions and cash prizes for first- and second-place winners. Participants are welcome to work individually or in teams of up to four people. All skill levels are welcome. The deadline to register is Friday, August 19, at noon EDT.

Fall 2022 LGBTQ meet and greet

Come and meet other LGBTQ students and get to know the University’s LGBTQ faculty and staff. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, a rainbow lanyard giveaway, pronoun and pride pins, and a raffle for Meliora hats. This event takes place Thursday, September 1, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons, and is open to all LGBTQ students. Register to attend.

Learn about becoming a Neighborhood Ambassador

Are you living off campus for the 2022–23 school year and looking to make a difference in your new neighborhood? The Off-Campus Living Program, under the guidance of the Office for Residential Life and Housing Services, created the Neighborhood Ambassadors Program to assist University students with their transition to off-campus living. The Neighborhood Ambassadors provide a point of contact for the student residents on their assigned streets, provide access to community resources, and build community through programming and service. Arezzo Lisio Italian Studies Program

Are you interested in studying in Italy? The University’s Arezzo Lisio Italian Studies Program through the Center for Education Abroad is located southeast of Florence in the city of Arezzo, steeped in history, art, architecture, and culture. Online teaching workshops

Learn more about a series of one-hour “how-to” workshops to get you started with basic online activities. This series covers everything from giving live or recorded lectures, using various discussion board tools, giving an online test, and providing a platform for asynchronous student presentations.
