At-home sensors can spot Parkinson’s disease

A new study shows that a device that passively monitors breathing during sleep can not only detect Parkinson’s disease but also track the progression of the disease over time. The researchers used an artificial intelligence tool to sift through data from study participants to find patterns that identify the disease and determine its severity.

In a message sent yesterday to PhD students, University President Sarah Mangelsdorf, Provost David Figlio, Executive Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer Liz Milavec, and Vice Provost and University Dean of Graduate Education Melissa Sturge-Apple shared that the University will expand its single-payer health insurance coverage to all full-time PhD students across the institution. NASA's Artemis I moon mission is a go for August 29

“You’re hearing the voice of a supermassive black hole that’s billions of times larger than the sun,” says Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor of Physics and Astronomy. Frank appeared on CNN to explain a busy week in space news, from NASA’s green light for the Artemis 1 moon mission to new images of Jupiter from the James Webb Space Telescope to the first recordings of the sound of a black hole.

Apply for Clinical and Translational Science Institute pilot award funding

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute is now accepting applications for two funding programs with a potential start date of July 1. The Pilot Studies Program supports translational science projects that focus on a scientific or operational principle underlying a step of the translational process with the goal of developing generalizable principles to accelerate translational research. View the RFA and learn more about the three award categories: faculty, trainee and UNYTE translational research network. Submit initial abstracts by October 3.

The Novel Biostatistical and Epidemiologic Methods Awards support the development of novel biostatistical and epidemiologic methods that overcome analytic limitations and enhance the validity, accuracy, scope, or speed of clinical or translational research. A maximum of $35,000 will be awarded for a one-year period. View the RFA and submit initial abstracts by October 17.

Research networking event

The German Research Foundation is offering an opportunity for faculty to virtually meet with researchers at German universities of applied sciences and researchers from Canada and the US, as well as the chance to present your own research focus or project idea. Attend the second annual “Run FASD 5K” race and picnic, sponsored in part by the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Diagnostic and Evaluation Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic created in partnership with Mt.
