TODAY’S UPDATES

University COVID-19 tier level set to medium; masks are strongly encouraged

The University’s COVID-19 Tier level has been changed to medium. Face masks are now strongly encouraged for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors indoors. The University’s tier system directly correlates with the CDC’s COVID-19 community levels for Monroe County, providing a consistent framework upon which to base University masking guidance. The current tier is posted on the COVID-19 Resource Center and is included daily at the end of @Rochester. A full description of Medical Center masking requirements is available on the URMC Intranet (University network access required).

SECURITY TIP

Phishing, vishing, smishing...and quishing?

Since the beginning of the pandemic, mobile users have become accustomed to scanning black and white quick response bar codes—also known as QR codes—to instantly access information and promotions or browse a restaurant menu. Scammers have taken notice and are creating fake QR code stickers containing malware or directing users to malicious sites and placing them in public places in what are called “quishing” scams. When a mobile user is tempted to scan, they invite hackers into their device and put their personal information at risk. What should you do? QR codes give you the ability to preview the URL link before proceeding to its site. If the link looks strange, University IT advises you not to follow it. If you do move forward, and there are any fear tactics or time constraints on the page, it’s likely a scam.
