Global Celebration Committee invites University community's input to showcase diversity

The Global Celebration Committee, established in the spring, is overseeing an initiative to showcase the institution’s global diversity. The University community is invited to submit creative ideas that would represent Rochester’s global diversity in meaningful, valuable, and inspirational ways. The committee, cochaired by Nile Blunt, the McPherson Director for Academic Programs at the Memorial Art Gallery, and William FitzPatrick, the Gideon Webster Burbank Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy, will accept submissions through October 31 and make recommendations to University President Sarah Mangelsdorf in December.

Fall welcome, Faculty Senate messages from the provost

In a message sent yesterday to the University community, Provost David Figlio welcomed students, faculty, and staff to the start of the fall semester, announced upcoming opportunities for office hours, and emphasized the importance of adhering to the University’s COVID-19 guidelines. Figlio also recently addressed the University’s Faculty Senate, where he outlined some of his top priorities and expressed optimism for the University’s future.

What babies hear when you sing to them

“Babies are pattern detectors,” says Elise Piazza, an assistant professor of brain and cognitive sciences, who has studied early-childhood communication through language and music. Piazza says that singing creates a feedback loop, where a baby’s enjoyment motivates parents to sing more and builds parents’ confidence.

Pet therapy puppies

Attend an upcoming PAWS for Stress Relief event to pet some dogs, and leave with stress-relieving giveaways including lavender sachets and quote cards to hang up in your dorm, as well as information about other events. The next sessions take place at the Eastman Student Living Center on Thursday, September 8, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and at the Goergen Athletic Center on Monday, September 12, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

Online sex education class

Join University Health Service for its online program, Sex Ed 101, to learn all the basics of sexual health. Over the course of 21 days, you will learn about contraception, consent, masturbation, and more. Join at any time.

Writing tutoring services for AS&E students

The Writing and Speaking Center will offer its full range of tutoring services for Arts, Sciences & Engineering undergraduate and graduate students for the fall semester. Find opening dates, make an appointment, or watch a short, informational video to learn more about tutoring and writing groups online. World Universities Network research development fund

Internal applications are due Monday, September 12, for the 2022 World Universities Network research development fund. The annual competitive fund is aimed at bringing together researchers to undertake innovative, high-quality, sustainable research that addresses global challenges. Each member institution is permitted to lead two proposals per year but can collaborate on as many as desired. Mindfulness-based stress reduction

Explore the studied practice of living mindfully and how meditation can help provide more balance, stability, and satisfaction. Register for sessions starting September 13 through Well-U.

Fall supervisor series

The fall 2022 UR Medicine EAP Supervisor Series kicks off with the first virtual session, “Using EAP in Supervision,” on Wednesday, September 14, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. This session is for all managers and will provide an overview of EAP and help improve your ability to recognize employees having personal problems that are adversely affecting performance. Tuition benefit overview webinar

The Office of Total Rewards hosts a tuition benefit overview webinar on Thursday, September 15, at noon EDT to outline the features of the employee and dependent child tuition benefits. Learn about eligibility, differences between the tuition waiver and reimbursement, benefits available for dependent children, and the different application processes. Register here to attend.

Deadline for harassment and discrimination training is September 30

The deadline to complete the University’s annual training on how to identify and react to workplace harassment and discrimination is September 30. This training is an important component of efforts to address the damaging effects of harassment and discrimination and is required by state and federal law. “Culture of Respect: Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Discrimination” is available in MyPath and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Careers in Data Science: Sambuddha Bhattacharya

Join the Goergen Institute for Data Science for “Careers in Data Science” with Sambuddha Bhattacharya who leads the Telematics charter for Mobility Risk Intelligence company Zendrive. Learn about his career path, his work projects, and his tips for a career in data science. The event takes place toda, September 7, at 3:30 p.m. in Gavett Hall, Room 206.  

Data science lecture on political polarization and mitigating hate speech

Attend “Novel Frameworks for Quantifying Political Polarization and Mitigating Hate Speech” with Ashique KhudaBukhsh, an assistant professor at the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology, on Friday, September 9. The free research talk will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. EDT in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400, or virtually via Zoom.

Art New York exhibition, reception

Frontispace is hosting an exhibition of work created by University students who participated in the Art New York program in spring 2022. The exhibition represents the culmination of the time the students spent living, working, studying, and producing art in New York City. The exhibition runs through October 5 with a reception on Thursday, September 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be an information session for Art New York during the reception.

I-Corps@NCATS Regional Short Course offered

The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute are partnering to host the I-Corps@NCATS Regional Short Course this fall. The free virtual course is designed for biomedical scientists, clinician scientists, and engineers to provide a new approach to accelerate the translation of discoveries from the lab to clinical practice. It is meant for teams of faculty, postdocs, and students with biomedical innovations or ideas. Applications are due by October 3. Direct any questions to Karen Grabowski.

Face masks are optional for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors indoors. Patient care areas, as well as University shuttles and transportation, continue to require masking.
