Meliora Weekend returns in style

Mark Taubman to conclude CEO, dean terms In December 2023

Mark Taubman, Medical Center CEO and dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, will not seek reappointment upon completion of his terms on December 31, 2023, or later if a successor has not been identified. “I have been honored to lead this great institution and am proud of the significant advances we have achieved, particularly over the past two years,” Taubman said. “With so many of the goals of our strategic plan either accomplished or well underway, the time feels right to begin succession planning to assure our Medical Center is structured for a strong and vibrant future.”

“To me, the draw of DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) is its precision,” says Chris Marshall, an assistant professor of physics and DUNE’s physics coordinator. “This is an experiment that will be world-leading in just about everything that it measures.”


SECURITY TIP

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October marks the 19th annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month led and organized by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance. Keep a lookout for security tips that will help you stay ahead of incoming cyber threats. You can also visit University IT’s Information Security page to learn more about different scams, how to spot them, and ways to avoid falling victim to a scammer’s tactics.


FOR STUDENTS

Rochester iGEM information session

A team of undergraduate students will spend the summer of 2023 designing and building their own engineered biological system with the University’s International Genetically Engineered Machines team. iGEM projects aim to solve local, real-world problems. Students from any program are welcome to join. Participation in the project is worth eight credits, which can be used to fulfill elective requirements. Students in most biology tracks can use iGEM to replace their upper-level lab course, as well as a diversification course. iGEM team members must be enrolled in fall 2023.

LGBTQ+ Safe Space sessions

New opportunities for faculty and staff to register for LGBTQ+ Safe Space courses are now available. The first course is “Part 1: Gaining Knowledge” and can be found by searching for the “Safe Space Playlist” within MyPath.  Following the completion of this course, employees may register to complete “Part 2: Creating Safety,” which allows employees to become a University LGBTQ+ Safe Space Champion. Classes are free and remain virtual. Register to attend in MyPath. Direct questions to the Office of Learning and Development.

Public Safety leads community donation drive for Willow Domestic Violence Center

The Department of Public Safety is partnering with the Rochester community in support of the Willow Domestic Violence Center. University community members can donate new or gently used items in drop-off boxes at points across the University through October 31. Requested donations are listed on Willow’s wish list. Send questions to Erin Agnello via email or by calling (585) 623-9035. Donation boxes will be located in the following locations:

Tree planting for Indigenous Peoples’ Day

As part of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 10, the Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence is collaborating on the planting of a white pine tree—a symbol of peace—in original Haudenosaunee territory. Attend the planting today, October 3, at 3:45 p.m. at the institute, 929 South Plymouth Road.

Learn more about current events affecting Iranian women

Learn more about the current movement in Iran and how it affects Iranian women. “Let’s Stand with Iranians” takes place today, October 3, at 6:45 p.m. at the Interfaith Chapel, River Campus. Refreshments will be provided. This event is sponsored by the Graduate Student Association, Persian Student Association, and the International Student Office.

Celebrity bartender happy hour to benefit Friends of Strong

Join Friends of Strong for a celebrity bartender happy hour to benefit patient- and family-centered care. Enjoy complimentary appetizers as colleagues take turns serving drinks—with all cash tips going directly to Friends of Strong and Grappa matching the first $1,500 in tips donated. The event takes place Thursday, October 6, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Grappa in College Town.

‘Pause and Listen’ mindfulness class for the Eastman School of Music community

Join Melina Esse, a mindfulness educator at the Eastman School of Music, for a four-week course designed to help musicians build skills in reducing stress, managing performance anxiety, and becoming more present in their daily life. The classes run Thursdays October 20 and 27, and November 3 and 10, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Miller Center. This free offering is for all members of the Eastman community. Save your spot.


COVID-19 TIER STATUS

The current University COVID-19 tier level is

Masking when around other people indoors is strongly encouraged, especially for those who are at increased risk of severe illness if they become infected. Patient care areas, as well as University shuttles and transportation, continue to require masking. A full description of Medical Center masking requirements is available on the URMC Intranet (University network access required).
