Music schools founded on the Western classical model face special challenges

In a recent Q&A, Crystal Sellers Battle, the inaugural associate dean of equity and inclusion at the Eastman School of Music and director of the George Walker Center for Equity and Inclusion in Music, articulates a path toward long-term cultural change at the Eastman School. Sellers Battle’s position is an outgrowth of the Eastman Action Commission for Racial Justice, which was formed in 2020 to recommend “actionable, achievable, measurable, and sustainable” steps to accelerate the school’s work toward achieving a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.

Annual ‘Asthma, Allergy, and Pulmonary Update’ conference

The Medical Center’s 26th annual “Asthma, Allergy, and Pulmonary Update” is a one-day conference designed to provide physicians, physician extenders, nurses, respiratory therapists, and allied health professionals with an update in the fields of asthma, allergy, and selected topics in pulmonology. The conference aims to initiate practice changes by familiarizing learners with evidence-based diagnostic strategies and treatment advances that can lead to enhanced patient care and outcomes. The hybrid event takes place online and at Casa Larga Vineyards on Thursday, November 3. Register here to attend.

National Coming Out Day talk with Chloe Corcoran ’04

Chloe Corcoran ’04 will share her story for National Coming Out Day, from being a player on the Rochester football team’s offensive line to having her picture in Times Square for sharing her life through the “Being Trans” podcast. The talk takes place Tuesday, October 11, in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons, at 7:30 p.m. Register here to attend.

Workshop on leadership

The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is partnering with the Institute of Music Leadership at the Eastman School of Music for an interactive workshop. Led by Rachel Roberts, director of the institute, the workshop will help you define your leadership style, teach you how to establish group norms to improve your effectiveness and provide you with tools to reflect on your leadership style for continuous improvement. Register to attend the session on Tuesday, October 18, from 4 to 5 p.m. upstairs at the Barbara J. Burger iZone. Contact the Ain Center with questions.

Applications open for iZone's ‘Make It Happen’ grant

The “Make It Happen” grant awarded by the Barbara J. Burger iZone provides individuals and groups $300 to $500 in funding to help bring their ideas to life. Applications are due by Friday, October 21, at 11:59 p.m. and will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until then. All current University students and alumni are eligible to apply; students may apply as an individual or a group. The funds can be used to support any early-stage project activities such as brainstorming, user research, team-building, and prototyping. If you’re unsure about whether your project qualifies for the grant, email izonercl@gmail.com.
