Ronald Jones remembered for landmark work in international economics

Ronald Jones, a professor emeritus in the Department of Economics, is being remembered as a brilliant economist and a consummate faculty member. University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on October 18 for Jones, who died on September 27.

Events mark National Transfer Student Week

Join fellow transfer students and student support personnel as they celebrate National Transfer Student Week (October 17–21), organized by the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) to recognize and celebrate the journies of transfer students and the contributions they make to campus communities. Rochester events include:
  • Transfer Student Resource Fair, Tuesday, October 18; 3 to 5 p.m.; Bridge Lounge, Wilson Commons. Learn more and chat with members of the Office of Undergraduate Research, Kearns Center, Greene Center, Public Safety, and others.
  • Transfer Student Celebration and Giveaway, Wednesday, October 19; 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.; Lattimore 312. Stop by the lobby and counter of CCAS for some cookies and refreshments and to meet fellow transfer students.
  • Transfer Student Organization (TSO) Weekly Meeting,  Wednesday, October 19; 6 to 7 p.m.; Genesee Hall Room 325. Join the TSO for their weekly meeting. Pizza and other snacks will be provided.

Quality Institute fosters intellectual community with new program

The UR Medicine Quality Institute has introduced a new scholar appointment program that will include networking, special events, and meetings designed to better connect like-minded faculty members across the University to foster collaboration around quality improvement. Scholars will have priority access to clinical/operational data for analytics, evaluation and research activities, and other Quality Institute resources. Applications are due December 1. The Green Reps’ fourth annual sustainable cooking class takes place Tuesday, October 25, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Douglass Community Kitchen, Douglass Commons Room 406. Learn from Harvest Table chefs who will prepare fresh vegetarian and vegan meals using sustainable sourcing and cooking methods. Email your RSVP by Tuesday, October 18, to secure a spot. Removal of the Burrs ceremony

The University community is invited to join the Equity and Inclusion Council of Deans and Directors and the Native American & Indigenous Affairs Working Group at the virtual Removing the Burrs event today, October 17, from noon to 1 p.m. EDT. The ceremony, a traditional welcome for people visiting Haudenosaunee Confederacy territories, will be led by Rohsennase Dalton LaBarge, a first-generation, fourth-year medical student at the School of Medicine and Dentistry from the Tehanakarí:ne Bear Clan family of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation. Virtual talk on the benefits of quitting smoking, vaping

Visit the Center for Community Health & Prevention’s Facebook page on Thursday, October 20, any time after 11 a.m. EDT as Jennifer Lee, lead lifestyle counselor and tobacco treatment specialist at the center, presents “Ready to Quit? Help is Available When You Are.” The taped presentation will help you learn about risk factors for smoking and vaping, how lung health can improve after quitting, and where you can find support to quit. This talk is a special event for National Healthy Lung Month and National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, both celebrated in October.

Gather your unwanted electronics for E-Cycle Day

University Facilities and Services is partnering with Sunnking to hold the 15th annual E-Cycle Day event on Friday, October 21, from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Zone 3 South (formerly Park Lot) on the River Campus. It’s an opportunity for all members of the University to safely and easily recycle unwanted electronics from home. Almost all electronics are accepted at the E-Cycle Day event; see a list of accepted and restricted items.

Call for posters: Wilmot Scientific Symposium

The 27th annual Wilmot Cancer Institute Scientific Symposium will occur on Thursday, November 3. Wilmot will return to a traditional poster competition format this year, with the poster session occurring during lunch. All members of the University community are invited to submit posters on basic, translational, or clinical cancer-related research. In this context, “cancer-related” may be interpreted in the broadest sense. All poster presenters must submit the title and author information for their poster by Wednesday, October 26. Submissions will not be accepted after this date. Submit your poster information here.

Conference highlights current autism research, practice

The annual Skirboll Family Community Autism Spectrum Disorder Conference will be held virtually this year. The three-day conference will highlight current research and practice of interest to self-advocates, families, community professionals, and members of the University in three topic areas:
  • Sensory Processing, November 3, 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Health Equity and Advocacy, November 4, 3 to 5 p.m.
  • ADHD and Autism, November 5, 9 to 11 a.m.
