ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

First known map of night sky found hidden in medieval parchment

Scientific American, October 20

Hidden beneath Christian texts within a medieval parchment, scholars have discovered what seems to be part of the long-lost star catalog of the astronomer Hipparchus—believed to be the earliest known attempt to map the entire sky. In 2017, the pages were reanalyzed using state-of-the-art multispectral imaging. Researchers at the Early Manuscripts Electronic Library in Rolling Hills Estates, California, and from Rochester’s Lazarus Project took 42 photographs of each page in varying wavelengths of light and used computer algorithms to search for combinations of frequencies that enhanced the hidden text.

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Workday Expenses phase two rollout

The University is in the process of moving to an electronic system, the Workday Expenses module, for completing employee and student expense reports. This will replace the F2 Advance Airfare and F3/F34 Expense Report Excel forms currently used. Now that the pilot departments are set, the remaining University companies and cost centers are being separated to implement the functionality from November 2022 through March 2023. Visit the UR Financials expense management website for additional project information and how to prepare for your transition. Note: login is required to visit these sites.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

Put the pedal to the metal for National Rideshare Month

Rent a HOPR bike and pedal your way around campus and beyond. The University partners with the City of Rochester to host five HOPR bike stations across the University so you can bike to that meeting or class, or ride to lunch instead of taking your car. The campus community has taken more than 7,000 rides since HOPR debuted at Rochester in August 2021. The blue HOPR bikes may be rented through a mobile app, which offers pay-as-you-go options, single-day, and monthly passes. For riders using pay-as-you-go, the cost is $1 to unlock a bike and 15 cents per minute of riding. Visit the FAQ for details. Want a biking partner? The University partners with 511NY to offer a ridesharing portal with a Bike Buddy matching tool.
